Job summary

A leading food production business in Ely is seeking an Engineering Lead to join its engineering team. You will own maintenance operations, drive continuous improvement, and foster a proactive maintenance culture to maximise uptime and operational performance.

The role requires a hands-on leader with a strong mechanical or electrical background, capable of coaching a team, delivering safe systems of work, and collaborating with contractors and internal stakeholders to meet production targets.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Lead and support the engineering team to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective maintenance activities.
• Manage planned preventative maintenance programmes and drive improvements through the CMMS system.
• Provide hands-on support with mechanical and electrical fault finding and breakdown response.
• Prioritise engineering activities to minimise downtime and support production needs.
• Lead engineering projects with suppliers, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
• Develop safe systems of work and engineering procedures.
• Coach and develop the engineering team to improve capability and performance.
• Monitor engineering output for high workmanship and compliance.
• Build strong relationships with contractors and ensure documentation and procedures are in place.

We're supporting a leading food production business in their search for an Engineering Lead to join their engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer with leadership experience to take ownership of maintenance operations, drive continuous improvement, and develop a proactive engineering culture. You'll play a key role in ensuring equipment reliability, maximising uptime, and supporting operational performance across the site.

Core Duties:

• Leading and supporting the engineering team to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective maintenance activities
• Managing planned preventative maintenance programmes and driving improvements through the CMMS system
• Providing hands‑on support with mechanical and electrical fault finding and breakdown response
• Prioritising engineering activities in line with production requirements to minimise downtime
• Leading engineering projects, working closely with suppliers, contractors, and internal stakeholders
• Identifying and delivering improvements to equipment reliability, safety, and operational efficiency
• Developing safe systems of work and engineering procedures
• Coaching, mentoring, and developing the engineering team to improve capability and performance
• Monitoring engineering output to ensure high standards of workmanship and compliance
• Building effective relationships with contractors and ensuring all required documentation and procedures are in place

About You:

• Previous experience leading, mentoring, and developing engineering teams
• Strong mechanical or electrical engineering background
• Level 3 qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
• Hands‑on approach to maintenance and fault finding
• Experience working within a manufacturing, production, or FMCG environment
• Strong communication and organisational skills
• Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities
• Proactive mindset with a passion for continuous improvement
