Job summary

Stagecoach Group Limited in Northampton is seeking an experienced Engineering Director to lead our Midlands region, overseeing 5 maintenance depots and a fleet of over 350 vehicles, including 126 electric buses. You will drive safe, reliable operations, ensure compliance, and empower our people to excel while guiding the EV transition and maximising value from investments.

You’ll report to the Managing Director and operate as a Transport Manager nominee, with regional travel and relocation

Qualifications

  • Recognised engineering qualification.
  • Transport manager licence preferred (international operators).
  • Experience leading engineering operations across multiple sites.
  • Collaborative leadership with strong communication.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, environmental and transport laws.
  • Experience delivering KPIs and budgets in a unionised setting.
  • Strategic planning with day-to-day delivery capability.
  • Willingness to travel regionally and relocate if required.

Job description

Looking to lead an impactful engineering operation where people, safety and performance come first?
Based in Northampton, with travel across Northamptonshire & Warwickshire

We’re looking for an experienced and people-focused Engineering Director to lead our Midlands region, covering 5 maintenance depots and a fleet of over 350 vehicles, that includes a fleet of 126 Electric buses, with more on their way. In this key senior leadership role, you’ll be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all engineering activity, ensuring our fleet is reliable, our depots are compliant and well‑managed, and our people are supported to do their best work every day. Additionally, you will lead several key programmes across the region such as furthering our transition to EV, making sure our depots, processes and procedures are evolving with our fleet as well as maximising the value we can obtain from the investments we have made. You’ll report to the Managing Director and act as one of the nominated Transport Manager's on the Operator’s Licence. What you’ll be doing
  • Leading multi-site engineering teams to deliver safe, reliable and well-presented vehicles
  • Strategically overseeing depot facilities, premises, and engineering equipment across the region
  • Promoting a safety-first culture and ensuring compliance with all regulations and company standards
  • Developing team capability through coaching, mentoring and technical training
  • Building strong, constructive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including suppliers, trade bodies, local authorities and trade unions
  • Championing continuous improvement and innovation within engineering
  • Managing performance to meet agreed budgets, KPIs and service expectations
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues to improve customer satisfaction and align with Stagecoach’s Customer Value Proposition (CVP)
What we’re looking for
  • A recognised qualification in engineering
  • Ideally qualified as a transport manager for an international operators licence
  • Proven experience leading engineering operations across multiple sites
  • A collaborative and inclusive leadership style, with strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of health & safety, environmental and transport legislation
  • Experience delivering to KPIs, managing budgets, and working in a unionised environment
  • Confident managing both strategic planning and day-to-day operational delivery
  • Willingness to travel across the region and live locally (relocation support available)
