Job summary

What will your day look like?

As a Highway maintenance engineer within the Highway Asset Management, Maintenance and Structures Team, you will join a team that is responsible for the management of the local highway network.

The team delivers a wide range of activities, including cyclical inspections, annual condition surveys, reactive maintenance and identification and delivery of an annual programme of planned highway maintenance across the borough.

As a Highway Maintenance Engineer working in this team, you’ll take a leading role in planning, designing, coordinating and delivering highway maintenance schemes and programmes.

Your day may involve preparation of technical reports which will contribute to proposals for programmed maintenance and network improvements, identifying and developing maintenance schemes, investigating and respond to public and stakeholder queries.

You will act as a key consultee on the design of new highway layouts and associated engineering improvements submitted through the planning process, advising on their suitability for highway adoption.

You will also work closely with other Council services to coordinate service delivery requirements during planned works, supporting coordinated delivery and helping to minimise disruption across the highway network.

You’ll also be a key point of contact for routine technical queries, helping colleagues, Members, partners and stakeholders understand information clearly and confidently.

This is a hands-on technical role where your attention to detail, experience and ability to work with others will make a real difference.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking an experienced, innovative and forward-thinking engineer with strong technical knowledge, practical skills, and proven experience within the highways sector.

You’ll need to be organised, accurate and able to manage competing priorities to deliver programmes to time, cost and quality. As the role involves a mix of office-based work and site inspections, you’ll also need to be comfortable working outdoors in different weather conditions.

Experience of highway maintenance would be helpful, along with experience of inspections, surveys and customer service.

You need to be dependable, approachable and confident enough to share your technical knowledge in a way that helps others.
