Job summary

Stockport Council is seeking an experienced Employment Lawyer to join its in-house Legal and Democratic Services team on a permanent basis. The role focuses on advising the Council on a broad range of employment matters, including tribunal claims, unfair dismissal, discrimination, and TUPE.

You will handle a mixed caseload, provide pragmatic legal advice, and work closely with HR and other departments to minimise risk and develop team precedents. Hybrid working available in Stockport.

Qualifications

• Qualified Solicitor or equivalent with strong Employment Law experience.
• Experience advising employers in employment matters.
• Confident handling contentious and non-contentious matters; able to manage own caseload.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Handle Employment Tribunal claims and contentious employment matters.
• Represent in unfair dismissal and discrimination cases.
• Manage grievances, disciplinary proceedings, redundancy and TUPE.
• Draft and negotiate settlement agreements and employment contracts.
• Provide day-to-day employment advice to HR and Council departments.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to manage legal risk and develop precedents.

Employment Lawyer - Stockport Council
Location: Stockport / Hybrid
Salary: £52,000-£59,000
Contract: Permanent
Hours: 37 hours per week
CRA Consulting are currently recruiting for a permanent Employment Lawyer opportunity with Stockport Council, joining their Legal and Democratic Services team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Employment Lawyer to join a supportive in-house legal team and advise the Council across a broad range of employment matters.

The Role

• Employment Tribunal claims and contentious employment matters
• Unfair dismissal and discrimination
• Grievances and disciplinary proceedings
• Redundancy and organisational change
• TUPE
• Settlement agreements
• Employment contracts, policies and procedures
• Day-to-day employment advice to HR and Council departments
• Working closely with internal stakeholders to manage legal risk
• Contributing to team precedents, guidance and internal knowledge

About You

• Is a qualified Solicitor or equivalent
• Has strong Employment Law experience
• Has experience advising employers
• Is confident handling contentious and non-contentious employment mattersCan manage their own caseload effectively
• Has excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Can provide pragmatic and practical legal advice
• Works well as part of a wider Legal and HR team

Local Authority or wider public sector experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
