Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as an Emerging Talent Trainee Placement - Inclusive Heritage Project Assistant.
This is a part time, 18 hours a week, 8 week paid Emerging Talent Programme placement. You will be paid a £454 per week bursary(pro rata for part-time is £227 per week). This is a remote placement where you will be based from home.
Our training placements are for young people aged 18 to 30 years old across three audiences:
Black, Asian, or ethnic minorities
Disabled people
People who are disadvantaged by their social and/or economic background or circumstances
Purpose of the Placement
To work with the Inclusive Heritage Team in enhancing the heritage sector’s understanding of working with disabled participants and increasing recognition of disability heritage.
The placement will be working closely with a Senior Inclusive Heritage Advisor to help shape and deliver actions to address the barriers in heritage faced by disabled heritage staff, volunteers and participants.
We recently worked withDirect Access to conduct research about access to working, volunteering or participating in heritage for disabled people. The main function of this role is to support the team in shaping and delivering how Historic England responds to the findings of this work. This might include researching and developing guidance and training for the heritage sector, gathering case studies, helping to platform and promote disability heritage or shaping inclusive grants programmes at Historic England.
What you will be doing
Supporting the Inclusive Heritage Team in responding to recommendations from the recent Disability Access to Heritage research
Either: leading on the research, writing and image sourcing for a blog post about disability history on The Historic England Blog;drafting a case study about working with disabled participants in heritage projects for theInclusive Heritage Advice Hub ;or contributing to theMissing Pieces project to shed light on disability history
Providing support for ongoing development of disability inclusive grant programmes
Support stakeholder engagement with disabled people in the heritage sector
Meeting with other teams in Participation and Learning department (participation programmes, archive, learning, communities)
Events and meetings
We will be hosting a Welcome Event for all Emerging Talent Placements in our London office on 24 July 2025.
The working pattern for this placement is flexible and we will make accommodations for the successful candidate, with some compulsory elements;
A weekly meeting with the Inclusive Heritage Team on a Wednesday morning 10:30 – 12:00 (online via Teams)
Regular catch ups with the Senior Inclusive Heritage Advisor and any other meetings as they arise[SC2] , but advance notice and scheduling will be given for these.
There are also optional weekly 30 minute check in meetings with the Communities, Learning, Inclusion and Volunteering team on a Monday morning at 9:30 (online via Teams).

Why complete a placement with Historic England
Our placements will enable you to gain valuable hands-on experience of working in the heritage sector, developing skills to enable you to take the next steps in your career.
Once you have completed your Emerging Talent Placement you will be eligible to apply for a 6 month Step-Up placement. These are paid training roles, based within a team for six months full time (part time will be considered). They are specifically targeted for people who have undertaken one of our Emerging Talent Placements over the summer, either this year, or in a previous year.
These placements are designed to give you that “step up” into a longer paid work in the heritage sector.
They will also help you develop your essential skills, improving your employability.
