Job summary

Gateshead Council is seeking an exceptional Emergency Duty Team Manager to lead out‑of‑hours social work services, ensuring timely, legally compliant support for children, families and vulnerable adults in crisis. You will supervise a skilled team and collaborate with health, police and social care partners to secure better outcomes.

The role requires AMHP and social work registration, plus extensive experience in statutory services and risk management.

Qualifications

• Recognised Social Work qualification and registration with Social Work England.
• Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) qualification and current approval status.
• Significant experience in statutory children's and/or adult social care services.
• Experience supervising, developing and managing practitioners and teams.
• Extensive experience of assessing and managing risk in complex and high‑pressure situations.
• Experience leading quality assurance, audit and service improvement activity.
• Experience of workforce deployment, rota management and resource planning.
• Strong partnership working skills across agencies and services.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Emergency Duty Team, providing leadership to out-of-hours service.
• Oversee responses to safeguarding concerns, child protection, adult safeguarding, mental health crises and other emergencies outside normal hours.
• Provide professional supervision, quality assurance and leadership to the team.
• Work closely with Children’s Social Care, Adult Social Care, Health, Police and partners to coordinate a multi‑agency response.
• Contribute to service development, workforce development and performance improvement.
