Job summary

Fuse Energy in London-based teams is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to design, build and scale the connected hardware behind a fleet of distributed energy devices. You will work across embedded systems, networking, and security from prototype to production, collaborating with firmware, hardware and backend teams to deliver robust, secure, production-ready systems.

The role emphasizes secure provisioning, OTA updates, and resilient connectivity, with opportunities to shape device identity

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering or CS.

Responsibilities

• Connect/securely network devices across Ethernet, Wi‑Fi, Thread, Zigbee and BLE; implement MQTT/CoAP/HTTP/WebSockets messaging.
• Contribute to secure boot, provisioning and firmware update pipelines including OTA; maintain hardware-backed device identity.
• Integrate devices with cloud IoT platforms and backend services; improve telemetry and observability.
• Support testing for safety, EMC, radio and related requirements; prepare test plans and certification artefacts.
• Collaborate with firmware, hardware, power electronics, mechanical and software teams on designs and specs.

We're looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to help design, build and scale the connected hardware behind our fleet of distributed energy devices. This is a hands-on role spanning embedded systems, networking, device security and fleet connectivity, from prototype through to deployment. You'll help build resilient connectivity, secure provisioning and robust telemetry, working closely with firmware, hardware and backend teams to deliver production-ready systems.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain connectivity across Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee and BLE; build secure, reliable device messaging using MQTT, CoAP, HTTP or WebSockets; support device time synchronisation using NTP or PTP.
• Develop low-level firmware and drivers for microcontrollers and embedded peripherals.
• Integrate devices with cloud IoT platforms and backend services; improve telemetry, health monitoring and observability; support reliable field operation and debug fleet issues.
• Work closely with our test team to build the firmware and software that runs our automated test suite.
• Work closely withhardware, power electronics, mechanical and software teams; contribute to design reviews, technical documentation and interface specifications.

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
• 2+ years of experience building connected embedded products, or strong relevant industry/project experience.
• Proficiency with C/C++ for embedded systems, with experience of RTOS environments such as Zephyr or FreeRTOS.
• Strong proficiency with Python for testing, tooling or automation.
• Experience building automated test harnesses using test equipment such as programmable power supplies, loads, logic analysers, communications interfaces and more.
• Solid understanding of device connectivity and networking fundamentals, including IP networking and common transport/application protocols.
• Experience implementing or supporting secure device communications using TLS, certificates or device provisioning workflows.
• Familiarity with firmware update systems, bootloaders or CI/CD workflows for embedded software.
• Excellent practical debugging experience using lab and software tools such as logic analysers, protocol analysers, network sniffers or observability platforms.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work across hardware and software boundaries.
• Bonus: low-power wireless (Thread, Zigbee, BLE); cloud IoT services on AWS, Azure or GCP; secure boot, TPMs, secure elements or hardware attestation; EMC/RF testing, antenna bring-up or factory test; awareness of standards such as IEC 62443, ETSI EN 303 645, ISO 27001 or GDPR; industrial, energy or distributed device deployments.
