Job summary

Holt Executive Ltd is seeking an experienced Embedded Linux Developer to join a highly technical engineering team in the UK. You will work across embedded Linux, bare-metal systems, RTOS, and driver development, interfacing software with hardware and solving complex challenges.

You will contribute from initial concept through delivery, collaborating with multidisciplinary engineers and ensuring robust, maintainable embedded solutions.

Qualifications

  • Strong experience developing embedded Linux systems.
  • Knowledge of device trees, user space, kernel space and SoC platforms.
  • Experience with embedded hardware/software integration.
  • Willingness to learn Yocto for custom Linux images.
  • Adaptability and enthusiasm for learning new technologies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work on technically challenging projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to produce clear technical documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to embedded engineering projects from early development through to delivered solutions.
  • Develop software for Embedded Linux systems, including ARM-based SoCs.
  • Develop software for RTOS and bare-metal embedded systems across a range of microcontrollers and silicon platforms.
  • Support system bring-up, board integration, debugging and performance optimisation.
  • Work closely with FPGA and electronics engineers to integrate software and hardware.
  • Develop and maintain device drivers, embedded applications, algorithms and communications protocols.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex software and system-level issues.
  • Contribute to project planning, technical documentation and software development processes.
  • Apply robust software engineering practices throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Communicate technical information effectively to engineering teams and customers.

Job description

We are looking for an experiencedEmbedded Linux Developerwith a strong grounding in embedded MCU and Linux development to join a highly technical engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys working across different technologies and applications, with the chance to contribute to projects spanning embedded Linux, bare-metal systems, RTOS, device drivers,algorithmsand communications protocols.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, supporting projects frominitialconcept through to delivery. The role offers significant variety and the opportunity to work at the interface between software and hardware, solving complex technical challenges and developing robust, maintainable embedded solutions.

Applicants for this role must hold, or be eligible to hold, UK SC Clearance.

Key Responsibilities

Desirable Experience

Experience with a good selectionof the following would beadvantageous:

  • Yocto/ custom Linux image development.
  • Real-time C/C++ development.
  • Python, C#/.NET or another higher-level language for tooling and test automation.
  • Open architecture standards.
  • RTOS and bare-metal development.
  • Hardware interfacing and board-level development.
  • DSP,algorithmsand state machines.
  • Application-layer and low-level communications protocols.
  • Working at the boundary between electronics and software.
  • Ability to interpret electronics schematics when developing embedded firmware.
  • System-level debugging and fault diagnosis.
