Job description

Embedded Electronics & Firmware Engineer

Department: Engineering

Location: Witney, UK (Hybrid)

The Business

Oxford Flow was founded in 2015 as a spin-out from The University of Oxford and produces some of the most precise and accurate flow control valves in the world. We are an engineering led technology company which has revolutionized valve design with our range of Zero emissions control valves and regulators; these products will transform global fugitive emissions in industries such as oil & gas, gas transmission & distribution, and other process industries.

The addressable market for Oxford Flow’s innovative technology is a £5bn sector of the global £70bn valve and actuator market.

The company has recently secured £20m investment from two major strategic organisations to accelerate its growth plans and we are seeking talented individuals to be part of the exciting journey to follow.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Product Development and Innovation, the Embedded Electronics & Firmware Engineer will provide dedicated electronics and firmware design capability within the Innovation / R&D team, taking technical ownership of the embedded electronic products and sub-systems that underpin Oxford Flow’s next generation of intelligent valves and regulators.

This is a broad and influential role. The successful applicant will play a central part in a major new programme to develop a new industrial electronic controller to integrate with our existing product range. A portion of this development will be delivered with external design partners, so the role carries responsibility for setting requirements, steering and reviewing contracted work, and integrating deliverables into a robust, manufacturable product. Alongside this, the role will support and improve the existing sensor solutions we currently manufacture and contribute embedded expertise across the wider product roadmap.

We are open on level and will shape the role to the individual: it suits an experienced engineer looking to lead the embedded electronics domain, or a strong mid-level engineer ready to broaden into system ownership and contractor management. The engineering team has a rigorous internal technical review process, and the successful applicant should feel comfortable making technical presentations and writing reports to a high standard, working within a technical review environment alongside the rest of the engineering team.

Responsibilities
  • Design embedded electronic hardware – schematic capture, PCB design and bring-up – for new products and for the improvement of existing products.
  • Develop, test and maintain embedded firmware (C / C++) for microcontroller-based products (STM32), including for control sensing, signal conditioning and communications.
  • Provide internal technical leadership on the embedded electronics and firmware for the industrial controller programme: define requirements and specifications, guide and manage contracted development partners, review their deliverables, and integrate the results into a verified product.
  • Create and review technical documentation to support development and release of new products, including requirements, test plans, design reports and technical files.
  • Plan and carry out verification and validation testing of electronics and firmware, both in house and at external facilities, and process the resulting data.
  • Attend and present at team and project meetings, providing project progress updates and technical presentations to technical and non-technical audiences.
Required Skills and Experience
  • A degree in Electronic, Electrical or a closely related Engineering discipline. An advanced modern apprenticeship to a minimum of HNC level with multiple years’ relevant industry experience will be considered.
  • Several years of industrial experience in embedded electronics and/or firmware development. Candidates able to demonstrate the ability to lead a technical domain independently will be considered at a senior level.
  • Candidates should have demonstrable expertise in some of:
  • Firmware development in C / C++ for microcontrollers – the primary focus of this role.
  • Development on STM32 microcontrollers and the STM32Cube tools and ecosystem.
  • Embedded hardware design – schematic capture and PCB layout in Altium or similar.
  • Mixed-signal and analogue design, sensors and signal conditioning.
  • Specifying, managing and reviewing work delivered by external design partners or suppliers.
  • Proficiency or knowledge of some of the following would be advantageous:
  • Industrial communications protocols such as HART, Modbus and CAN.
  • Control systems and closed-loop or control methods.
  • Product development for industrial, hazardous-area environments (ATEX / IECEx).
  • Functional safety and design to recognised industry standards.
  • Data analysis and test automation using Python or MATLAB.
