Room at the Top Recruitment seeks an Electronics Hardware Engineer for a Cambourne-based role. You will own board-level hardware development from specification through production release, delivering robust, production-ready electronics for resource-constrained IoT devices.

The role combines design, verification and cross-functional collaboration across teams in the UK, Israel and the United States. You will work in a hybrid setup with two days onsite and three at home, on a 2-year PAYE contract,

Qualifications

  • BSc or equivalent in Electrical/Electronics or related field.
  • 6–8 years of hands-on board-level hardware development experience.
  • Experience in schematic design, component selection, PCB layout guidance and bring-up.
  • Firmware integration, design verification and validation experience.
  • Strong understanding of low-power, digital, analogue and mixed-signal electronics; I2C, SPI, UART.

Responsibilities

  • Own the complete board-level hardware lifecycle from requirements to production release.
  • Guide PCB layout, prototype bring-up, hardware debugging and firmware integration.
  • Deliver low-power, mixed-signal and wireless designs meeting EMI/EMC and regulatory needs.
  • Create specifications, calculations, test plans and production release records.
  • Support engineering changes and root-cause investigations throughout the lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in the UK, Israel and the US.

Electronics Hardware Engineer

Our global client's Technology Solutions division is evolving. They are moving to a Product Operating Model - a new way of working that empowers product teams to take full ownership and accountability for delivering customer and business value in ways our customers love and that work for the business.

Leadership of the Product team is shared between the Product Manager and the Technology Lead, ensuring balanced guidance that bridges product vision and technical execution.

Their product and platform teams are cross-functional and durable, bringing together all the skills required to deliver impactful outcomes. Each team includes a Product Manager, Technology Lead, Product Designer, Delivery Lead, engineers, and developers.

Join our client as they building such a team in their Cambourne site. The team will develop and deliver future generations of the Vence Collar, a multidisciplinary connected product with an advanced system architecture and demanding low-power, sensing and wireless requirements. Short delivery cycles and direct customer feedback will provide clear visibility of the impact of your work.

As an Electronics Hardware Engineer, you will own board-level hardware development from specification through production release. Have significant impact on our multidisciplinary R&D projects, grow with us as we venture into new technologies, and contribute to the connected devices line of products throughout both discovery and delivery. You will design, develop, debug, and optimise optimize robust, production-ready electronics Hardware for resource-constrained, low-power IoT devices while contributing to product discovery, delivery and continuous improvement.

The role is a full-time PAYE temporary contract position with a sign off for 2 years offering an hourly rate of £31.54 - £53.64 per hour depending on experience, plus 25 days holiday pro rata. You will be offered the opportunity of hybrid working (2 days per week onsite and 3 days from home) with some flexibility to be onsite when needed.

Duties include:

  • Own the complete board-level hardware lifecycle, including requirements, specifications, component selection and schematic design.
  • Guide PCB layout and lead prototype bring-up, hardware debugging, firmware integration, design verification and validation.
  • Deliver low-power, mixed-signal and wireless designs that meet functional, reliability, manufacturability, EMI/EMC and regulatory requirements.
  • Create clear specifications, engineering calculations, test plans, reports, design records and production-release documentation.
  • Support engineering changes, root-cause investigations and design improvements throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary product and platform teams in the UK, Israel and the United States.

Experience, Knowledge & Skills

The position requires strong practical electronics engineering capability, sound technical judgement and disciplined execution from concept through production.

  • Hardware design: Proven ability to develop digital, analogue and mixed-signal circuitry using calculations, simulations and structured design reviews.
  • Low-power and wireless systems: Ability to optimise battery-powered IoT hardware and integrate microcontrollers, power architectures, sensors and wireless technologies.
  • Verification and release: Experience planning and executing bring-up, design validation, compliance testing, failure analysis and production transfer.
  • Communication: Ability to produce high-quality technical documentation and communicate decisions, progress, risks and blockers clearly.
  • Working style: Self-motivated, pragmatic and organised, with the ability to work autonomously and contribute constructively to multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications & Education

Mandatory Requirements

  • BSc or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Six to eight years of hands-on board-level hardware development experience, including involving in at least one product from specification through production release.
  • Demonstrated experience in schematic design, component selection, PCB layout guidance, bring-up, firmware integration, design verification and validation.
  • Strong understanding of low-power design, digital, analogue and mixed-signal electronics, common interfaces including I2C, SPI and UART, and structured failure analysis.
  • Methodical, organised and able to deliver production-ready, maintainable hardware with complete technical documentation.

Desirable Experience

  • Battery-powered micro-power systems, embedded microcontroller designs and power-budget optimisation.
  • Wireless integration involving LoRa, GNSS, Bluetooth or comparable technologies, including RF coexistence and antenna considerations.
  • EMI/EMC design, pre-compliance testing, regulatory compliance and design-for-manufacture activities.

Proficiency with Altium Designer or an equivalent professional PCB design platform.
