Job description

Summary
A quantum technology company is seeking an Electronic Engineer to develop advanced photonic quantum hardware systems. This hands-on role covers analogue and mixed-signal circuit design, PCB development, laboratory validation, and system integration, working alongside physicists, optical engineers, and software developers to build next-generation computing platforms.
Responsibilities

  • Design and develop analogue and mixed-signal electronics for precision photonic hardware, including signal conditioning, low-noise amplification, DAC interfaces, and opto-electronic driver circuits.
  • Own PCB development from schematic capture and simulation through layout, design reviews, prototyping, testing, and iteration.
  • Bring up and characterise new hardware using laboratory equipment including oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analysers, and other instrumentation.
  • Debug electronic systems methodically, identifying root causes and implementing design improvements.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to define hardware interfaces and support system-level integration.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams across physics, optics, and engineering to translate technical requirements into practical hardware solutions.
  • Support EMC testing, compliance activities, and progression towards product-ready hardware.
  • Produce clear technical documentation including schematics, specifications, design reviews, and test reports.
Requirements
  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 2-4 years’ experience in electronics or hardware engineering (industry experience preferred, though strong research/laboratory experience will be considered).
  • Strong understanding of analogue and mixed-signal electronics, including:
    • Amplification
    • Filtering
    • Signal conditioning
    • Low-noise circuit design
    • ADC/DAC interfaces
  • Practical PCB design experience, including schematic capture, simulation, and layout using tools such as Altium Designer, KiCad, or equivalent.
  • Experience using laboratory equipment to test, debug, and validate electronic designs.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems and microcontroller-based hardware.
  • A structured and analytical approach to problem solving, with the ability to design experiments, interpret results, and iterate effectively.
Desirable Experience
  • Knowledge of RF electronics fundamentals, including impedance matching and transmission lines.
  • Experience with EMC testing or regulatory compliance (CE, UKCA, or similar).
  • Experience integrating electronics with optical, photonic, or opto-electronic systems.
  • Exposure to advanced research environments or complex multidisciplinary engineering projects.
Benefits
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge photonic and quantum technologies with real-world applications.
  • Hands-on ownership of advanced hardware development projects from concept through to deployment.
  • Collaboration with leading scientists, engineers, and researchers across quantum, optics, electronics, and software.
  • Opportunity to contribute to technology shaping the future of AI and high-performance computing.
  • A highly collaborative environment where engineers have significant technical ownership and impact.
  • Competitive compensation package and equity opportunities.
