A bit about us...Asahi Glassplant UK Ltd. (AGI UK) is a subsidiary of Asahi Glassplant Inc (AGI), Japan. AGI specialises in providing premium quality chemical processing equipment from laboratory scale to manufacturing scale. Our wide range of products serve all chemistry sectors but especially the pharmaceutical industry. AGI was founded in 1950, is the market leader in Japan and now employs over 700 people.
AGI UK's head office and electromechanical assembly facilities are based in Royston, Hertfordshire and we have a glass fabrication facility in Sutton, near Ely, Cambridgeshire. AGI UK is responsible for sales within the EMEA region but manufactures scientific instruments and scientific glassware that is sold globally via the AGI group.
A bit about the role...The Electronics Engineer role is involved in the design, development, and integration of electro-mechanical systems and components used in chemical laboratories and manufacturing plants. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, detail-oriented, and experienced in the full product development lifecycle.
Reporting to the Director of Electromechanical Engineering, the engineer's responsibilities may be summarised as:
- Design and develop electronic systems for automation equipment, from concept through to production.
- Create detailed schematics, PCB layouts, and embedded firmware for new electromechanical products.
- Work with suppliers and fabrication partners to procure parts and ensure that the parts meet specifications and quality standards.
- Support the identification, troubleshooting, and resolution of hardware and firmware issues during both development and production phases.
- Collaborate closely with electro-mechanical and software engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of electronic systems.
- Prepare and maintain product documentation and manufacturing data packages.
- Ensure products comply with relevant regulatory standards.
- Follow the health and safety protocols which the company has established.
- Comply with the requirements of the Business Management System.
RequirementsA bit about you...We would hope that the Electronics Engineer holds the following attributes:
- Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in electronics development, ideally within laboratory instrumentation, biomedical devices, or automation systems.
- Proficient in PCB design using tools such as Altium Designer or KiCAD.
- Strong foundation in embedded system architecture and design.
- In-depth knowledge of analog and digital circuit design, including the use of ADC/DAC converters.
- Experience developing firmware in C for 32-bit microcontrollers (e.g. STM32).
- Proficient in high-speed electronics design (e.g. USB, Ethernet, PCIe).
- Practical experience in implementing control systems with sensors, actuators, and motion control systems.
- Practical experience in applying EMC/EMI considerations and best practices in circuit design.
- Skilled in firmware-hardware integration and debugging.
- Hands-on experience with soldering, PCB assembly, and cable assembly.
- Familiarity with electrical safety and compliance standards (e.g. IEC, ISO).
Some non-essential but desirable experiences include:
- Rapid prototyping using platforms like Raspberry Pi and STM-NUCLEO.
- Familiarity with automated testing frameworks and scripting.
- Software development in C++, C# or any other object-oriented programming languages.
- Familiarity with Real-Time Operating Systems (e.g. FreeRTOS, ThreadX).
- Familiar with building a Linux based operating systems (e.g. Yocto, Debian).
- Involvement in product compliance activities involving CE (e.g. LVD, RED), FCC and NRTL.
