Job Description:
This position reports to the Senior Manager - MALDI Group. The role will be based in the company's R&D Department and focus on developing new, sophisticated electronic systems & subsystems. Working with Physicists, Software, Mechanical, and Production Engineers, the work encompasses the full product lifecycle from design specifications to manufacturing.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure adherence to health and safety procedures, operating equipment only if qualified or trained.
- Create specifications for new designs.
- Perform detailed design and documentation (schematics, PCB layouts, FPGA configurations).
- Provide time estimates for designs to the Senior Manager.
- Use Management Information Systems for bills of materials, drawing numbers, and parts control.
- Raise Manufacturing Change Notes and permits as needed.
- Implement approved design changes.
- Liaise with suppliers and internal teams.
- Meet standards such as ISO61010, ISO13485, 21CFR820.
- Stay updated on third-party components and design techniques.
- Evaluate and test prototypes.
- Investigate issues from design, testing, or field failures.
- Support the Purchasing team in supplier evaluation.
- Provide technical support to colleagues.
Qualifications:
Experience (Essential/Desirable):
- At least 5 years experience in developing XPS or MALDI Mass Spectrometer instruments or similar devices, with FDA compliance where applicable (D).
- Experience designing digital and analogue electronics, including FPGA (E).
- Experience with electronic simulations and design verification (E).
- Experience through full product lifecycle from design to manufacturing (E).
- Experience with EMC, RoHS, UL standards is a plus (D).
- Experience with risk assessment and FMEA (D).
Job Related Aptitude and Skills (Essential/Desirable):
- Strong all-round electronics design skills; FPGA control and acquisition systems are a plus (E).
- Analogue design, power management, sensor interfaces, ADC/DACs, amplifiers, control (E).
- Schematic capture and PCB design (Altium preferred) (E).
- Board-to-board and network connectivity design (E).
- High Voltage design knowledge (D).
- C/C++ firmware, VHDL, and Xilinx Microblaze experience (D).
- Good team player (E).
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or working towards it (D).
