Job summary

Cummins Drivetrain & Braking Systems in Nuneaton, United Kingdom, is seeking an Electronic Hardware Specialist to lead advanced hardware design for next-generation braking and steering ECUs and sensors.

You will architect scalable hardware architectures, drive validation, and collaborate with software, controls, and mechanical engineers to deliver robust, production-ready solutions while ensuring safety and compliance with ISO 26262.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or STEM field required.
  • Post-graduate/Master's degree may be required for select roles.
  • Proven experience in automotive electronics and ECU design.
  • Experience with safety standards and hardware verification.

Responsibilities

  • Architect ECUs, sensors, and actuators for braking and steering.
  • Lead analog, digital, mixed-signal, and power electronics development.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 26262 and other safety requirements.
  • Collaborate with software and mechanical teams to deliver hardware-software solutions.
  • Lead design reviews, bring-up, debugging, verification, and qualification testing.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship across teams.

Job description


  • Architect next-generation braking and steering electronics: Define scalable ECU, sensor, and actuator hardware architectures that enable safe, reliable, and high-performance control systems for commercial vehicles.

  • Drive innovation in safety-critical hardware design: Lead the development of analog, digital, mixed-signal, and power electronics that support advanced braking and steering technologies.

  • Ensure compliance and product integrity: Embed functional safety, EMC/EMI, environmental, reliability, and cybersecurity requirements into hardware designs from concept through production.

  • Influence key technical decisions: Select microcontrollers, processors, communication interfaces, power devices, and sensors that optimize performance, cost, and long-term scalability.

  • Enable seamless system integration: Partner with software, controls, systems, and mechanical engineering teams to deliver robust hardware-software solutions that meet vehicle-level requirements.

  • Accelerate product development and validation: Lead design reviews, prototype bring-up, debugging, verification, and qualification testing to ensure products are production-ready.

  • Solve complex engineering challenges: Conduct root cause analysis and drive resolution of technical issues during development, validation, and manufacturing phases.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship: Guide cross-functional teams and support the growth of junior engineers while establishing engineering best practices across the product lifecycle.


To be successful in this role you will need the following:


  • Bring deep expertise in automotive electronics: Leverage extensive experience designing ECUs, sensors, and actuator control systems, with strong knowledge of analog, digital, mixed-signal, and power electronics.

  • Apply advanced hardware architecture and validation knowledge: Utilize expertise in microcontrollers, automotive communication networks, PCB design, EMC/EMI, signal integrity, and hardware verification to deliver robust, production-ready solutions.

  • Champion safety, quality, and compliance: Demonstrate a strong understanding of ISO 26262, hardware safety analysis, automotive development processes, and requirements management to ensure reliable and compliant products.

  • Collaborate and innovate across disciplines: Work effectively with software, controls, systems, mechanical engineering, and suppliers while applying knowledge of commercial vehicle technologies, cybersecurity, and next-generation braking and steering systems.
    College, university, or equivalent bachelor's degree in engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

  • Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

  • Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred
