Summary of Position

The Systems Engineer will support stakeholders in creating practical concepts and providing expertise for electromechanical process automation or robotic solutions. This includes design documentation, requirements definition, testing, and process development to develop automated manufacturing solutions while mitigating risks. The role also involves responsibility for technical documentation and operator manuals for bespoke systems.

Primary Responsibilities

Departmental

  • Provide expertise and assist in developing automated robotic handling, manufacturing, inspection, and assembly systems.
  • Generate initial concepts for electromechanical systems, leveraging the skills of engineers across the business for best practices and quality.
  • Ensure design concepts are well documented for use across departments.
  • Create operator and technical documentation for completed systems.
  • Carry design through testing to identify issues early, document findings, and suggest solutions.
  • Act as an ambassador for the Systems Engineering Department, promoting its work professionally.
  • Mentor and provide design input to other engineering teams.
  • Support sales engineering in developing project proposals, including customer visits and process assessments.
  • Conduct engineering studies to evaluate process or equipment viability.
  • Comply with company and departmental policies and procedures.

Functional

  • Perform formal testing of equipment under development.
  • Assist in developing proposals and documentation such as process appraisals, system proposals, requirements, process flow, and system diagrams.
  • Help produce general operator manuals and technical documentation.
  • Support research activities within the department.
  • Create concept designs, including 3D models and analytical assessments.

Person Specification

Essential Experience and Qualities

  • At least 5 years’ experience in engineering design or manufacturing.
  • Experience from concept to commissioning.
  • Proficiency in generating system requirements and structured design.
  • Experience with technical authoring and testing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a creative, analytical approach.
  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and Visio.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with vision systems, manufacturing process development, ISO standards, SolidWorks, industrial robots, PLC control, electrical systems, software control (C#), composites manufacturing, and estimating materials and time.

Qualifications

Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
