Job summary

National Grid is seeking a Network Technician based at Gloucester depot. You will be accountable to the Operations Manager for the construction, maintenance and repair of underground and overhead networks up to 66kV, and for the programming and monitoring of colleagues, with safety as a priority.

Essential qualifications include City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, training in 11kV switching, and LV/HV network experience.

Qualifications

• City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 or equivalent Level 2 electrical qualification is essential.
• Experience or training in 11kV switching will be provided.
• Experience with LV and HV network operations is required.
• Full UK driving licence is required.
• Residence within ~60 minutes of the Gloucester depot is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee network operations and issue safety documents up to 66kV.
• Construct and maintain distribution substations and overhead lines up to 11kV.
• Repair and replace faulty plant, cables and lines.
• Record asset routes, details and locations, and plant specifications.
• Connect generators and support project safety procedures.

Job description

Job Introduction

An opportunity is available for a Network Technician based at Gloucester our depot.

You will be accountable to the Operations Manager for the construction, maintenance and repair of the underground and overhead network up to 66kV. In addition, you will be responsible for the programming and monitoring of immediate work colleagues, switching up to 66kV, the issuing of appropriate safety documentation and dealing with other tasks appropriate to the Technicians role.

You are required to have grade A*-C/4-9 GCSE in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in both subjects. In addition, you must hold a City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 or equivalent Level 2 qualification in Electrical Engineering.

Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

• Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Main Responsibilities

• Network operations including the issue of Limitations of Access and Permit to Work safety documents up to 66kV
• Construction of distribution substations, construction and alteration of overhead lines and associated plant. Installation of plant. Laying and jointing of cables up to 11kV.
• Repair and replacement of faulty and obsolete plant, cables and overhead lines.
• Recording asset routes, details and positions.
• Recording plant details.
• Connecting generators.

Ideal Candidate

We're looking for a proactive, safety-focused individual with experience in electricity network operations who can work independently, make sound operational decisions, and contribute effectively within a small team. You'll be an excellent communicator, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, and capable of managing competing priorities and tight deadlines.

Essential Requirements

• A City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 qualification, or an equivalent Level 2 qualification in Electrical Engineering.
• Working towards or experience of 11kV switching (training will be provided).
• Experience of Low Voltage (LV) and High Voltage (HV) network operations.
• A full UK/EU driving licence.
• The ability to participate in the standby rota and travel throughout the operational area.
• Residence within approximately 60 minutes of the depot location.

Ideally, You'll Also Have

• A background in electricity distribution, ideally within a Craft, Technician, Engineer or similar operational role.
• Experience working within a DNO, IDNO, private network operator, or on industrial 11kV networks.
• Strong IT skills and confidence using operational and business systems.
• An awareness of project management and financial management principles.
• Knowledge of National Grid Electricity Distribution systems and processes (desirable, not essential).

Potential candidates should be aware that for some of the National Grid positions that require working at height, or use fall arrest devices, there is an upper weight limit 135kg due to maximum safe working load of the safety equipment that is used.
