Job summary

Expleo in Bristol is seeking an experienced Electrical Technician to join our engineering team, supporting assembly, integration and testing of electrical/electronic systems for defence programmes.

You will build wiring harnesses, cable assemblies and test equipment from drawings, troubleshoot faults and ensure compliance with quality and safety standards in a high-integrity environment.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and engineering drawings.
  • Cable preparation including cutting, stripping, crimping, soldering and termination techniques.
  • Basic fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Follow structured work instructions and test procedures.
  • Familiarity with IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC-A-610 and/or J-STD-001 standards.
  • Good communication and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble electrical and electronic test rigs, fixtures and equipment.
  • Manufacture wire looms, cable assemblies and electrical control panels from drawings.
  • Crimp, solder and terminate wiring and connectors to a high standard.
  • Install and route cables per engineering specifications.
  • Carry out continuity, insulation resistance and functional testing of electrical assemblies.
  • Diagnose faults and implement corrective actions with engineers.
  • Support integration of equipment into larger systems.
  • Produce and maintain build records and test reports.
  • Ensure compliance with health & safety requirements and quality standards.
  • Maintain workshop equipment and a safe working environment.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

We are looking for an experienced Electrical Technician to join our engineering team in Bristol, supporting the assembly, integration, testing and fault diagnosis of electrical and electronic systems used within complex defence programmes.

As an Electrical Technician, you will play a key role in the manufacture, assembly and verification of electrical and electronic equipment. Working from engineering drawings and technical documentation, you will build wiring harnesses, cable assemblies and test equipment while supporting integration and verification activities to ensure products meet customer and quality requirements.

You will work closely with Electrical, Electronics and Systems Engineers to troubleshoot issues, support development activities and deliver high-quality engineering solutions within a safety-critical environment.

Responsibilities
  • Assemble electrical and electronic test rigs, fixtures and equipment.
  • Manufacture wire looms, cable assemblies and electrical control panels from engineering drawings, wiring diagrams and build instructions.
  • Cut, strip, crimp, solder and terminate wiring and connectors to a high standard.
  • Install and route cables in accordance with engineering specifications and industry best practice.
  • Carry out continuity, insulation resistance and functional testing of electrical assemblies.
  • Perform inspections to ensure assemblies meet quality, workmanship and customer standards.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and electronic faults, working with engineers to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Support the integration of electrical and electronic equipment into larger systems.
  • Assist with prototype builds, design verification activities and engineering investigations.
  • Produce and maintain accurate build records, inspection documentation and test reports.
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company procedures, health & safety requirements and quality standards.
  • Maintain workshop equipment, tools and a safe working environment.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing and test activities.
Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, BTEC or equivalent qualification in Electrical, Electronic or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • IPC certifications would be advantageous but are not essential.
Essential skills
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and engineering drawings.
  • Competent in cable preparation including cutting, stripping, crimping, soldering and termination techniques.
  • Basic fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow structured work instructions and test procedures.
  • Familiarity with IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC-A-610 and/or J-STD-001 standards.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Desired skills
  • Experience working within Defence, Aerospace or other safety-critical industries.
  • Experience with prototype builds and low-volume production.
  • Familiarity with electrical test equipment including multimeters, insulation resistance testers and oscilloscopes.
  • Knowledge of ESD control procedures.
  • Understanding of quality management systems such as AS9100 or ISO 9001.
  • Experience supporting engineering development and verification activities.
  • Experience within an electrical assembly, wire harness, cable assembly, panel wiring or electronic manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience assembling and testing electrical or electronic equipment.
  • Experience carrying out electrical testing, including continuity and insulation resistance testing.
