Job description

I am recruiting on behalf of my client for a practical, technically capable and highly customer-focused Electrical Technician to become their primary day-to-day representative at a major customer site near Cheltenham.

This is a hands-on engineering position combining electrical and electronic fault finding, test-system support, wiring and equipment modification with significant customer interaction. The successful Electrical Technician will develop an in-depth understanding of the customer's equipment and operating environment, providing responsive first-line technical support while working closely with specialist engineering teams when more complex issues arise.

The Electrical Technician will be predominantly based at the customer site near Cheltenham, making this an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys taking ownership of technical problems while building strong relationships with engineering, production and maintenance teams.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Acting as the primary day-to-day technical representative at the customer site.
  • Providing first-line support for automated test systems and associated electrical/electronic equipment.
  • Investigating operational issues and diagnosing faults to module level and, where appropriate, component level.
  • Using DMMs, oscilloscopes, LCR meters and other standard electronic instrumentation for fault diagnosis.
  • Carrying out electrical wiring, modification, repair and rework activities to approved engineering information.
  • Completing looming, crimping, terminating and soldering work to an appropriate professional standard.
  • Reading and interpreting electrical schematics, wiring schedules, system diagrams and general arrangement drawings.
  • Following calibration, test and diagnostic procedures and interpreting results to identify potential equipment failures.
  • Undertaking basic mechanical and fabrication activities, including drilling, panel modification, damaged-fastener removal and thread repair.
  • Escalating complex technical issues to specialist engineering colleagues where appropriate.
  • Identifying recurring equipment issues and opportunities to improve reliability, maintainability, usability and performance.
  • Supporting technical discussions, requirements capture and customer-site activities.
  • Working alongside the Account Manager to understand wider customer priorities and identify areas where additional engineering, test, support or obsolescence expertise could add value.

I am particularly interested in speaking with Electrical Technician candidates who have a solid electrical/electronic engineering foundation combined with genuine hands-on experience maintaining, supporting, manufacturing, repairing or modifying complex equipment.

Ideally, you will bring:
  • HNC/HND or equivalent in Electrical, Electronic or a related engineering discipline, although relevant practical experience will also be considered.
  • Electrical/electronic fault-finding experience to module level, with component-level diagnostic capability advantageous.
  • Confidence using DMMs, oscilloscopes and LCR meters.
  • Practical wiring skills including looming, crimping, terminating and soldering.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring schedules, system diagrams and engineering drawings.
  • Experience working to recognised wiring and workmanship standards, with IPC-WHMA-A-620 certification desirable.
  • Basic mechanical and fabrication skills associated with test-equipment modification and repair.
  • An understanding of automated test systems and the ability to run and interpret test programmes as part of system fault diagnosis.
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to work directly with customer engineering, production and maintenance teams.
  • A pragmatic approach to problem-solving, including knowing when an issue requires escalation or additional specialist expertise.
  • Experience within control systems, power electronics, electromechanical systems, instrumentation, RF or communications would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Experience gained within aerospace, defence, manufacturing, test engineering or another highly regulated engineering environment would also be beneficial.

Although the Electrical Technician will principally work from the customer site near Cheltenham, occasional travel may be required to support test systems elsewhere in the UK and Europe. This could include occasional visits to Toulouse for technical training and knowledge transfer, alongside visits to the UK operation currently based in Bournemouth. Travel is expected to represent a relatively small proportion of the role.

The package includes:
  • Attractive salary package.
  • Pension scheme - 4% employee / 8% employer contribution.
  • Full family healthcare plan.
  • Family health cash plan.
  • 27 days' holiday plus bank holidays.
  • Life assurance.
  • Income protection insurance.

If you are a hands-on Electrical Technician who enjoys fault finding, practical electrical/electronic engineering and working closely with customers, I would be keen to discuss this opportunity with you.
