Job Description: Electrical Engineer

Location: Manchester, United Kingdom

Client:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Electrical Engineer to serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in High Voltage (HV) Traction Power and Low Voltage (LV) Distribution systems for a leading rail contractor. The role will focus on improving asset reliability, engineering maintenance regimes, and contributing to a high-performing, safety-focused engineering team.

Key Responsibilities:

• Act as the SME for HV Traction Power and LV Distribution engineering and maintenance activities.
• Lead the development and implementation of engineering changes using Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) principles to enhance electrical asset reliability and maintenance efficiency.
• Review and improve Electrical & Mechanical (E&M) maintenance strategies including the creation of:
• Design and develop tools, processes, and procedures to enable reliability and risk-based maintenance approaches.
• Develop and review safe systems of work to ensure safe operations and compliance with electrical safety standards.
• Lead technical and safety incident investigations, determine root causes, and deliver actionable recommendations.
• Perform technical audits and participate in cross-discipline safety audits to ensure quality and compliance.
• Support a culture of performance and accountability by contributing to the achievement of objectives, standards, and KPIs.
• Promote an inclusive workplace and uphold the FREDIE (Fairness, Respect, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Engagement) values. Take a zero-tolerance approach to inappropriate behaviour.
• Ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of self and team by embedding Zero Harm principles and Just Culture practices.
• Contribute to the planning and execution of maintenance activities and asset renewals/enhancements in collaboration with project teams.
• Develop proposals for renewals and enhancements in partnership with TfGM Asset Engineers.
• Collaborate with other engineering disciplines through interface meetings and joint projects.
• Provide guidance and mentoring to colleagues, including graduate engineers and apprentices, to build technical competence and support career development.
• Support the development and implementation of a competency framework for the electrical asset group.

What you will bring:

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge of HV electrical infrastructure and overhead line traction power systems.
• Understanding of regulatory frameworks for electrical and rail/light rail systems.
• Experience in railway environments and large engineering organizations.
• Proficient with remote monitoring systems and CMMS platforms.
• Experience in client-facing roles and managing suppliers/contractors.
• Skilled in implementing engineering change and producing HV switching programs.
• Strong background in root cause analysis for asset failures and safety incidents.
• Capable of developing maintenance, engineering, and safety documentation.
• Experience in asset condition assessment and maintenance audits.
