Job description

Electrical Engineer

[Desired start date] Mid-June 2025

Role Purpose

To manage all electrical equipment associated with manufacturing processes. Supporting project engineering on current and new process developments. Direct electrical crafts team supported by Maintenance superintendent.

Key Accountabilities

1. Electrical Equipment - Accountable for all electrical repairs and maintenance activities for equipment and facilities within the site, including LV and HV systems.
2. Ensure all maintenance and project activities comply with statutory and Company requirements related to Quality, Environmental, and Health & Safety.
3. Assist in designing, procuring, factory testing, and commissioning of equipment, machinery, and facilities for the new submarine power cable plant.
4. Assist with electrical maintenance in the submarine power cable plant once operational, including reactive and planned maintenance.
5. Develop and approve electrical planned maintenance procedures prior to plant operation.
6. Develop the Asset Management System ahead of operations.
7. Electrical Craft Team - Allocate resources efficiently to maximize plant availability and product quality.
8. Responsible for electrical uptime, scoping work, resource requirements, and timelines.
9. Lead root cause investigations to eliminate failures.
10. Provide technical leadership and guidance to electrical technicians.
11. Manage performance and development of electrical maintenance staff, including appraisals.
12. Maintenance Strategy - Develop and implement strategies to maximize efficiency, including corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance.
13. Assist in planning, budgeting, and scheduling facility modifications, working closely with colleagues in the UK and Japan.
14. Support the implementation and maintenance of ISO standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
15. Partnerships and Teamwork - Collaborate across departments and with external consultants to ensure efficient and effective facility-related work.
16. Assist in designing, commissioning, and maintaining assets to sustain operational performance.
17. Experience in implementing different maintenance systems and strategies, estimating workload, and producing uptime/downtime trends.

Preferred Knowledge / Skills / Experiences

• Degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent experience in engineering management.
• Proven success in a similar role, with significant experience in heavy industry electrical engineering.
• Experience in electrical major construction projects is advantageous.
• Knowledge of 18th Edition IEE Regulations.
• Strong technical understanding of electrical engineering and interfaces with mechanical activities.
• Experience in PLC design, writing, and commissioning.
• Desirable: Experience with continuous manufacturing processes.
• Strong management and communication skills.
• Proven skills in estimation, planning, and resource management for a multifunction team.
• Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to plan and resource shutdowns effectively.

Other Information

• Initially based in Inverness, with some travel, including overseas.
• Once main installation starts, based in Easter Ross.
• Training opportunities available, including networking with the Japanese headquarters.

About the Project in Port of Nigg, Highland

Sumitomo Electric is a leading global manufacturer of high-end electricity transmission cables, up to 525kV HVDC. The new factory in Nigg, with a £350M investment, aims to support UK’s Net Zero targets by contributing to renewable energy infrastructure, creating over 150 jobs, and utilizing local supply chains.

Construction of the subsea transmission cable factory is underway to supply critical components for the UK’s electricity grid and renewable energy projects.
