Job Description:

We are looking for an Electrical Design Engineer (Contractor) for an initial 6-month engagement.

This role involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team producing designs for equipment associated with specialist Naval deck machinery, including Replenishment At Sea (RAS) equipment, winches, reelers, and cranes. The position covers the entire lifecycle from interpreting customer requirements during tendering, through concept development, detailed design, manufacturing support, testing, and installation onboard naval vessels.

Responsibilities
  • Develop Electrical Engineering solutions that meet client requirements, from requirements capture through to product development, commissioning, and in-service support.
  • Investigate safety and technical problems using structured problem-solving techniques.
  • Develop circuit diagrams for motor control equipment, including direct-on-line and variable speed drives.
  • Develop cable connection diagrams for motor control and control console equipment.
  • Be self-motivated, use own initiative, and work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide technical guidance to equipment suppliers, internal departments, and customers.
  • Manage supplier interfaces and provide technical assistance/approval to suppliers.
  • Check the technical work of others and guide colleagues, suppliers, and customers.
  • Create technical design appraisal documents for submission to marine classification societies.
  • Carry out Arc Flash assessments and other calculations to substantiate designs (experience with MathCAD is an advantage).
  • Perform other tasks as needed to meet business requirements.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Independent Ltd Company setup or via an Umbrella Company.
  • BEng in Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical knowledge and experience.
  • Chartered Engineer status (an advantage).
  • At least 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience in a highly regulated industry.
  • Experience in concept, product development, and in-service support.
  • Experience selecting AC and DC motor control systems, including variable speed drives.
  • Ability to design and prepare detailed electrical schematics, single line diagrams, and cable schedules.
  • Experience with PLCs, motion control, and serial communication networks (e.g., Beckhoff systems preferred).
  • Experience with closed-loop position/motion control systems.
  • Ability to produce technical specifications, test procedures, and manuals for marine electrical systems.
  • Competent in using CAD software (AutoCAD, EPLAN, etc.).
  • Proficient in MS Office applications.
  • Familiar with BS EN 8888 standards for drawings.
