Job summary

Barrett Steel Limited is seeking an experienced Electric Overhead Crane Engineer based in Northern England, primarily supporting Scunthorpe operations. You will maintain, inspect, diagnose faults and repair EOTCs to maximise reliability and safety across the group.

Key responsibilities include planned maintenance, fault diagnosis, RAMS preparation, and data reporting, with travel to other Barrett Steel sites as required. A strong electrical/mechanical background and IPAF are essential.

Qualifications

  • Be safety focused and adhere to current standards.
  • Qualification in an appropriate Electrical and/or Mechanical discipline.
  • Strong electrical knowledge and practical experience with overhead cranes.
  • Experience with Konecranes, ABUS and Demag crane systems.
  • UK driving licence is essential.
  • IPAF 3a and 3b certification.
  • Knowledge of lifting industry regulations and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance on overhead cranes and related equipment.
  • Diagnose electrical and mechanical faults and perform repairs.
  • Conduct root cause analysis after equipment failures to prevent recurrence.
  • Maximise crane availability and reliability through proactive maintenance.
  • Provide technical guidance on crane operation and maintenance.
  • Complete RAMS and reviews for lifting operations.
  • Collect and report crane performance data to management.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment performance.
  • Ensure compliance with Barrett Steel Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental policies.
  • Travel to Barrett Steel sites across the UK as needed, with primary duties in Scunthorpe.

All About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Electric Overhead Crane Engineer based in Northern England to join our Asset Care Crane Division. This position will primarily support our Scunthorpe and group operations, with occasional travel to other Barrett Steel sites across the UK.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the preventative maintenance, inspection, fault diagnosis, and repair of Electric Overhead Travelling Cranes (EOTCs), ensuring maximum reliability, safety, and operational efficiency across the group.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure that own and team operations, including those undertaken on the Company's behalf are conducted in manner which fully complies with Barrett Steel Health and Safety, Quality, Environmental and Group Policies.
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on overhead travelling cranes and associated equipment.
  • Diagnose electrical and mechanical faults and undertake effective repairs.
  • Conduct root cause analysis following equipment failures to prevent recurrence.
  • Maximise crane availability and reliability through proactive maintenance strategies.
  • Achieve high first-time fix rates to minimise downtime and maintenance costs.
  • Provide technical guidance on crane operation, maintenance, and lifting activities.
  • Complete Risk Assessments, Method Statements (RAMS), and Point of Work Risk Assessments.
  • Collect and report crane performance data monthly to management.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment performance.

Essential Skills for the role

  • Experience working at height and understanding of Health & Safety requirements.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • IPAF 3a and 3b certification.
Desirable Qualifications
  • LEEA Diploma or equivalent lifting industry qualification.
  • IOSH Health & Safety certification.
