Job summary

Cooled Motors Ltd is seeking an Electric Machine Control Engineer to design, model and validate motor-control algorithms for next-generation electric drives. You will work with power electronics, EM, mechanical and thermal teams to bring concepts from simulation into tested prototypes, focusing on control of electric machines and inverters.

You will develop in MATLAB/Simulink and related tools, analyse performance, and contribute to control architecture and hardware integration for automotive

The role

We are looking for an Electric Machine Control Engineer to develop, model and validate the control systems for our next-generation electric drives.

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on developing motor-control algorithms, inverter control, simulation, embedded implementation support and validation on real hardware. You will work closely with our power electronics, electromagnetic, mechanical and thermal teams to bring advanced electric-machine concepts from simulation into tested prototypes.

The role is primarily focused on electric machine control, but a good understanding of inverters, power electronics and drive hardware will be important.

Key responsibilities

You will:

  • Develop control strategies for electric machines and electric drive systems.
  • Develop motor-control models in MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape, PLECS or equivalent tools.
  • Develop control logic for inverter-driven electric machines, including PWM/modulation, sensing, limits and protection interfaces.
  • Analyse drive performance across torque, speed, efficiency, thermal and transient operating conditions.
  • Support model-based design, auto-code generation and embedded implementation where appropriate.
  • Work with electromagnetic engineers to translate motor behaviour into control requirements.
  • Work with power electronics engineers to ensure control algorithms are compatible with inverter hardware, sensing and switching constraints.
  • Support calibration, parameter identification and control tuning on test rigs.
  • Support inverter, motor and dynamometer testing.
  • Debug control behaviour, sensor issues, inverter interaction, transient response and stability problems.
  • Compare simulation results with experimental data and improve models accordingly.
  • Produce clear control documentation, test procedures, calibration notes and validation reports.
  • Help define the control architecture for future electric-drive platforms.

You should have:

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Mechatronics, Power Electronics, Electronic Engineering or a closely related subject.
  • Experience developing control algorithms for electric machines, motor drives, inverters or related electromechanical systems.
  • Strong MATLAB/Simulink modelling and simulation experience.
  • Understanding of three-phase machines, inverters, PWM, current control and feedback systems.
  • Knowledge of control theory, dynamic systems and closed-loop control.
  • Ability to analyse torque, speed, current, voltage, efficiency and transient response data.
  • Hands-on experience testing, debugging or validating control systems.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-moving engineering environment.
  • Clear technical communication and structured problem-solving ability.

It would be useful, but not essential, if you have or have experience with:

  • Master's or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Power Electronics, Control Engineering, Mechatronics or a closely related subject.
  • Experience with power electronics, inverters, converters, motor drives or high-voltage electrical systems.
  • Embedded C/C++, DSPs, microcontrollers or real-time control systems.
  • PLECS, LTspice, Simplis, PSIM, SPICE, Typhoon HIL, dSPACE, Speedgoat or OPAL-RT.
  • Gate drivers, protection circuits, current sensing and DC-link design.
  • Altium, OrCAD or schematic/PCB review.
  • High-voltage safety, EMC/EMI, thermal design or functional safety.
  • CAN, CANalyzer, CANape or similar automotive communication tools.
  • Dynamometer testing or electric motor test rigs.
  • Automotive, aerospace, motorsport, EV, industrial drives or electrification programmes.
What we are looking for

We are looking for someone who can combine control theory with practical engineering judgement.

You should be comfortable building models, designing control algorithms, tuning systems, analysing test data and debugging behaviour on real hardware. You should have good understanding of how control decisions interact with inverter hardware, sensing, switching, voltage limits, current limits and thermal constraints.

This role would suit someone who wants to work close to the core performance of an electric drive, rather than only developing high-level software or disconnected simulations.
