Job summary

Royal Borough of Greenwich is seeking an Elective Home Education Support Officer to assist the Elective Home Education Officer in monitoring children educated at home and ensuring a suitable education is provided.

You will assess provision, work with parents and schools, and help ensure safeguarding and statutory duties are met, escalating where necessary, including potential School Attendance Orders.

Qualifications

• Experience working with children, young people and families.
• Good knowledge of education, attendance or safeguarding issues affecting vulnerable children.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience working with schools, parents and other professionals.
• Strong partnership and multi-agency working skills.
• Ability to provide advice and guidance while confidently challenging where necessary.
• Good ICT, case recording and data-handling skills.
• Understanding of relevant education legislation, guidance and Local Authority responsibilities.
• Commitment to safeguarding, equality and improving outcomes for children and young people.

Responsibilities

• Contact parents of children and young people who are electively home educated to understand and assess their education provision.
• Provide parents with advice and guidance on suitable education and signpost them to appropriate support.
• Review education provision with families and refer concerns to the Elective Home Education Officer where further action is required.
• Work with and challenge schools regarding EHE referrals, including concerns around inappropriate or illegal off-rolling.
• Maintain accurate EHE registers, databases and individual case records.
• Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding and child welfare concerns.
• Liaise with schools, Children’s Services and other relevant agencies where there are concerns about education or welfare.
• Attend meetings, panels and SEND annual reviews for EHE children with EHCPs where required.
• Gather statistical information and contribute to Council reports and DfE statutory returns.
• Support training and guidance for schools, colleagues and external agencies around EHE responsibilities.
• Participate in events and activities designed to support and engage parents.
• Keep up to date with EHE legislation, DfE guidance, policies and developments.
• Support case audits and quality assurance activity within the service.
