Job summary

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking an experienced Environmental Health Officer / Community Protection Officer to join the Private Sector Housing Team. This role will drive the Selective Licensing programme, improve housing standards and ensure landlords meet their responsibilities to provide safe, well-managed homes across the borough.

You will undertake inspections, investigations and enforcement actions, provide professional guidance to landlords and tenants, and support service

Qualifications

• Degree in Environmental Health or recognised equivalent qualification.
• Competency in the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).
• Experience in housing enforcement, environmental health or regulatory services.
• Experience of investigating offences, serving statutory notices and enforcement action.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage a varied workload in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead and undertake compliance inspections within Selective Licensing areas.
• Investigate housing standards complaints and identify hazards under HHSRS.
• Deliver proportionate but robust enforcement action where standards are not met.
• Issue legal notices, prepare evidence files and support prosecutions and penalties.
• Provide professional advice and guidance to landlords, agents, tenants and partner agencies.
• Manage complex housing enforcement cases and contribute to service improvements.
