Paediatric Education Fellow

JOB PURPOSE:

Chesterfield Royal Hospital provides undergraduate (UG) medical placements across all clinical years for Nottingham and Sheffield University Medical Schools. The role supports curriculum delivery for increased student numbers, focusing on Child health, with clinical skills maintained through a weekly service commitment in Paediatrics.

Main duties of the job

Typical weekly educational activities:

  • Bedside teaching and supervised direct patient contact.
  • Formal theoretical teaching (classroom and virtual).
  • Case-based discussions and tutorials.
  • Simulation training.
  • Generic clinical skills training.

Support for central educational activities:

  • Curriculum mapping of clinical opportunities.
  • Placement planning and induction.
  • Development of teaching materials and resources.
  • Support for consultants and ward supervisors.
  • Engagement in assessment activities like mock OSCEs.

Clinical Activity:

  • Work clinically one day each week to support service provision.
  • Develop and consolidate clinical skills in Child health.

Links with HEI:

  • Contribute to undergraduate activity for associated HEIs.

Personal Development:

  • Completion of PG Cert Med Ed or similar qualification (funding available).
  • Link clinical workload with educational delivery and credibility.
  • Engage in educational research.
  • Participate in workforce and quality projects if applicable.
  • Maintain evidence for GMC annual appraisal.

JOB PLAN and TIMETABLE:

Working week includes:

  • 3 days for education role.
  • 1 day for study (PG Cert and SPA).
  • 1 day for clinical work.

Flexibility in scheduling is expected to accommodate curriculum delivery and PG Cert requirements.

Person specification
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years post-graduate clinical experience.
  • At least one 4-month post in Paediatrics.
  • Teaching experience with UG medical students.
  • Minimum 12 months NHS experience.
  • Experience in Paediatrics post-Foundation.
  • Medical education experience with formal teaching responsibility.
  • Research publication evidence.
Skills and Knowledge
