Job overview

The Undergraduate Medical Education Team at Chesterfield Royal Hospital is looking to appoint an Obstetrics and Gynaecology Senior Education Fellow for a fixed term period of 12 months, with the potential for further extension. The role has been specifically designed to support clinicians who wish to demonstrate a commitment to education as part of their career vision and training journey and provides the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised education qualification. You will join a team of five other clinical fellows based in medical and surgical specialties.

Applications are welcome from interested candidates from across the seniority spectrum. The minimum requirement is 2 years O&G clinical experience within the NHS post foundation years (completion of ST2 or equivalent).

This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic and innovative department delivering teaching to medical students across a range of year groups from both Nottingham and Sheffield University. A funded qualification in Medical Education with 1 day a week protected study time will aid professional development in delivering teaching across a range of modalities – from theoretical teaching based in classrooms to bedside teaching and immersive simulation.

Clinical skills will be maintained with 1 day a week clinical work appropriate to trainee experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a named clinical supervisor.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KEY RESULT AREAS:

Typical weekly educational activities - to include:

  1. Bedside teaching/supervised direct patient contact.
  2. Formal theoretical teaching (classroom and virtual).
  3. Case-based discussion and debrief/tutorials.
  4. Simulation (both sim suite and in situ).
  5. Generic clinical skills training.

Support for central educational activities - to include:

  1. Curriculum mapping of clinical opportunities.
  2. Placement planning and induction.
  3. Local OSCE practice preparation and delivery.
  4. Teaching material/resource development.
  5. Supporting Consultant/ward supervisors.
  6. Developing effective relationships with colleagues, including consultants and ward supervisors, providing them with support to enable the effective delivery of education.

Clinical Activity:

  1. Work clinically one day each week to support service provision.
  2. Develop/consolidate clinical skills within Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Links with HEI:

  1. Contribute to UGM activity for associated HEIs (e.g. OSCE examination/question setting)

Personal Development:

  1. Completion of PG Cert Med Ed, or similar developmental qualification (full or partial funding will be available depending on specific personal request and HEI proposed).
  2. Undertake clinical workload and link this with an understanding of the importance of contextualising and establishing credibility for delivery of education in the clinical setting.
  3. Opportunity to engage in Educational research.
  4. Undertake workforce and generic L&D quality projects if available/applicable to an area of interest.
  5. Maintain evidence for successful annual medical appraisal in line with GMC expectations.
Person specification
Qualifications and Training
  1. MBChB or equivalent
  2. Full GMC registered with license to practise.
  3. Completion of Part 1 MRCOG
  4. MRCS.
  5. Post Graduate qualifications and/or training in medical education.
Experience
  1. Minimum of 2 years O&G clinical experience within the NHS, post foundation years
  2. Teaching delivery experience (any modality) to UG medical students.
  3. Completion of ST2 or equivalent
  4. Experience working in a surgical based specialty post Foundation years.
  5. Medical education experience gained through formal responsibility for teaching any health care group.
  6. Evidence of research and/or peer reviewed publication/s.
Skills and Knowledge
  1. Demonstration of ability to teach and appreciate differing learning needs.
  2. Use of online learning platforms.
  3. Involvement in service analysis and improvement.
  4. Good understanding of the secondary care environment (demonstrable experience gained through working in either general surgery or a surgical sub-specialty).
  5. Knowledge of UGM curriculum.
  6. Experience of delivering teaching virtually.
  7. Ability to use a wide range of educational methodologies.
