The Role

As the Vice President of Engineering at Synthesized, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of software testing infrastructure. You’ll lead a world-class team of engineers and researchers - ranging from machine learning and statistics experts from top UK universities to seasoned software engineers building enterprise-grade systems.

Reporting directly to the CEO, you'll be responsible for defining and executing our engineering strategy, fostering a culture of technical excellence, and scaling a high-performing team. This role is a unique blend of strategic leadership and hands-on execution: mentoring teams, enforcing high engineering standards, nurturing cross-functional collaboration, and driving continuous innovation.

We’re looking for a proven leader with experience managing top-tier software engineering and data science teams, a deep understanding of data-intensive systems, and a strong passion for building elegant, scalable solutions. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and lead our growing team consisting of machine learning engineers, backend, and frontend engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • You will lead a team of over 20 talented individuals, providing mentorship, guidance, and career development opportunities, enabling them to excel in their roles and contribute effectively to the company's success.
  • Advocate for and contribute to the company's engineering culture, promoting knowledge sharing, collaboration, and a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers to define and prioritize the product roadmap, ensuring that our solutions meet the evolving needs of our customers.
  • Partner with product and senior management to develop product and company strategies and break them down into engineering initiatives and objectives.
  • Develop and execute a robust technology strategy that leverages machine learning, backend development, and frontend design to create best-in-class data provisioning solutions.
  • Serve as the technical lead, providing direction, effective delegation, tradeoff management, and strategic decision-making to steer the team towards success.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including sales, marketing, and product, to ensure that engineering efforts align with business objectives and customer requirements.
  • Attract, hire, and retain top engineering talent. Create a nurturing environment for skill development and career growth within the engineering organization.
  • Ensure that our software solutions meet the highest standards of quality, security, and compliance, particularly in handling sensitive data.
  • Develop and manage budgets for engineering operations, including staffing, equipment, and software. Ensure that resources are allocated effectively and efficiently, with consideration for the well-being of team members.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and developments, and continuously evaluate emerging technologies and approaches to ensure the engineering team remains competitive and adaptable.

About You

  • Experience: 10 + years proven experience in both senior engineering and engineering leadership roles, preferably within a Series A or high-growth startup environment.
  • Team Leadership: Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Strategic Thinking: The ability to think strategically and translate business objectives into actionable engineering plans.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Adaptability: The capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment and adapt to changing priorities and requirements.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep technical knowledge and expertise in machine learning, backend development with the ability to make informed decisions and guide the team effectively.
