Job description

Imperial College London’s Department of Computing is a world-leading Computer Science department, with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. With around 1,000 taught students, the Department develops innovative software to support teaching, learning and assessment.

As part of the EdTech team, you will help design, build and operate software used every day by staff and students. You will work closely with users to understand their needs, develop new features, deploy and maintain reliable systems, and contribute to their ongoing improvement.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a highly technical and collaborative academic environment, using modern software engineering practices and technologies including Python, TypeScript and React. You will also have the opportunity to work with academic colleagues and students, bringing professional software engineering practice into the curriculum and exploring how new technologies, including AI and automation, can enhance education.

What you would be doing

You will be part of the EdTech team, designing, developing and operating innovative software that supports teaching, learning and assessment across the Department. You will maintain and continuously improve production systems, working closely with academic and professional services colleagues and students to understand their needs and deliver effective, reliable solutions using modern software engineering practices.

You will also contribute directly to education through teaching, tutorials, mentoring and student project supervision, as well as providing guidance and training to colleagues on the use of educational technologies. You will collaborate with colleagues across the College and contribute to the wider digital education community.

Alongside software development and teaching, you will have opportunities to explore and evaluate new technologies and approaches to educational technology, using evidence and research to inform improvements. You will contribute to the sharing of good practice and maintain your professional development, while supporting the team's continuous improvement and taking part in relevant departmental activities.

What we are looking for

We are looking for an experienced software engineer with a degree or equivalent qualification in a Computing-related subject. You will have experience working collaboratively within a software engineering team and a strong understanding of modern software development practices, with the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies. Familiarity with web development frameworks such as FastAPI and React, as well as automated testing and CI/CD, is important.

You will be a creative and proactive problem solver who enjoys working collaboratively with users and stakeholders to understand their needs and develop high-quality solutions. You will be organised, able to manage your own workload and deadlines, and comfortable working with colleagues at all levels in a diverse academic environment. Experience deploying and managing Linux production systems would be an advantage, as would experience developing software for education.

Excellent communication skills are essential, along with an enthusiasm for teaching, training and supporting others. We are looking for someone who enjoys sharing knowledge, working as part of a team and contributing to their own professional development. Experience of university teaching or mentoring, and knowledge of educational practices, would be desirable.
