Full Job Description

We are a well-established, reputable, busy firm of solicitors based in Cardiff city centre, specialising in criminal and prison law, seeking an ambitious, dedicated solicitor to join our team.

The successful candidate will have some experience as an admitted solicitor in criminal law but must be hardworking and committed to representing clients facing the criminal justice system. It would be beneficial if the candidate has achieved their duty solicitor qualification; however, this is not essential if they are willing to work towards it upon commencing employment. Police Station Accreditation and knowledge of the Legal Aid system are essential.

Please note: a full driving licence and use of own car are required for this role.

Main Responsibilities include:

• Ensuring current knowledge of all areas of criminal law and maintaining competence
• Advising clients on the law, evidence, and sentencing guidelines applicable to their case
• Preparing all necessary documents for the criminal justice process (statements, defence case statements, legal arguments, etc.)
• Submitting applications for Legal Aid and related matters
• Representing clients at all stages of the criminal process (Police station, Magistrates Court, Crown Court, etc.) and advocating for their legal rights
• Maintaining accurate case records, time recording, and ensuring compliance with LAA contract and LEXCEL quality mark, while keeping clients informed about their case progression
• Being on call to represent clients at the police station out of office hours on a weekly rota
• Working under the instruction of senior solicitors

This is a full-time position of 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9 am - 5 pm, with overtime as required.

Salary: £TBC (depending on experience and qualifications) plus overtime for out-of-hours police station attendance.
