Job description

The Team

Infrastructure Advisory Group (IAG), part of KPMG Deal Advisory in the UK, comprises approximately 400 professionals and is recognized as a leading independent adviser in infrastructure, finance, and regulation. The group has received multiple awards, including Financial Advisor of the Year (Infrastructure Journal) for several years.

We provide comprehensive advice on strategic, financial, regulatory, and commercial issues affecting infrastructure investments across Transport, Power & Utilities, and Social Infrastructure in the UK and Europe. Our services include market and policy design, economic and regulatory analysis, deal structuring, and transaction execution, alongside strategic advice to facilitate private and public capital funding. We collaborate with other KPMG functions to advise on mergers and acquisitions, due diligence, and valuations.

Power & Utilities (P&U), led by Dr. Matt Firla-Cuchra, is the largest business area within IAG, with about 85 FTEs. It serves major clients including all UK utilities and leading energy and water companies across Europe. Our expertise spans strategy, market analysis, regulation, cost assessment, corporate finance, and transactions, helping clients structure investments, secure financing, and navigate regulatory regimes to maximize shareholder value. We are recognized as market leaders influencing the future of the utilities sector.

Our P&U division is organized into six practices: Water Regulation, Energy Regulation, Finance, Projects, Transactions & Energy Transition, and Cost Benchmarking. It has experienced double-digit growth over the past decade. We are seeking high-caliber candidates to support our growth and expand our service offerings.

The Role

You will join the Transactions & Energy Transition sub-team within P&U. The team has demonstrated strong growth, exceeding recent budgets. Currently comprising 10 FTEs, it aims to double its revenue and size within three years.

The Associate Director role involves:

  • Providing M&A and financial advice on energy transition sectors (e.g., energy efficiency, connections, metering, renewables) in collaboration with KPMG Corporate Finance.
  • Conducting regulatory due diligence on transactions in the regulated utility sector, leveraging team expertise in regulation, finance, and cost assessment.
  • Offering strategic, regulatory, and market advice to corporate and infrastructure fund clients in energy transition segments.
  • Advising regulated utilities on future energy policies, regulatory modeling, and valuations in the UK.
  • Supporting business origination efforts within the team and the broader Power & Utilities practice.
  • Managing multiple projects, ensuring high-quality deliverables for clients.
  • Developing and maintaining client relationships, especially with infrastructure investors, in collaboration with other KPMG Deal Advisory teams.
  • Ensuring compliance with KPMG's quality and risk management standards.
  • Mentoring and coaching junior staff, fostering team development aligned with the firm's values.

The projects you will advise on are high-profile and diverse, focusing on regulated utilities in the UK and energy transition in Europe. Recent examples include:

  • Sell-side M&A advisory on a C&I solar platform in Eastern Europe.
  • Strategic review of an energy efficiency company in Europe.
  • Regulatory due diligence on a large UK water utility.
  • Regulatory and commercial due diligence on a large OFTO.
  • Due diligence for acquiring an electricity distribution network.
  • Analysis of gas market prospects during a UK gas distribution company's takeover.

The Person

  • Extensive experience in M&A advisory within the Power & Utilities sector or consulting experience in the energy sector.
  • Proven track record managing transactions in utilities and infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of transaction processes and execution.
  • Experience with regulated utilities and/or energy transition sectors like energy efficiency, C&I solar, decarbonization, connections, and metering.
  • Knowledge of key energy policies and economic regulation of utilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure during live transactions.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Strong commercial awareness.
  • Proactive attitude with a drive to succeed and develop new opportunities.
  • Independent thinker with problem-solving skills.
