Ecologist

Hello. We’re Severn Trent and we think water is wonderful. And we’re pretty keen on people, too.

Our people are what makes Severn Trent a truly exciting and inclusive place to work. We’re a team of over 7,000 people with a purpose to deliver one of life’s essentials. We do it all while thriving in our unique culture and making a lasting difference to our planet, society, and careers.

If you want to do more because you care, we’d love to talk to you. There really is something for everyone here.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Our Customer Operations team have an opportunity for you to join as one of our newEcologists.

We're seeking multiple ecologists, so if you're open to opportunities in different counties, your application may be considered for those positions as well. Just let us know in your application.

You’ll help by providing support as part of our Biodiversity and Ecology Team, working closely with our Senior Ecologists and the wider business to provide ecological advice and guidance including the application of Biodiversity Net Gain.

Some of your other key accountabilities will include:

  • Assessing ecological risks and opportunities in asset design, construction and maintenance
  • Developing strategies for avoiding/mitigating harm in the design and delivery of schemes.
  • Ensuring licenses, and controls are in place to meet species and habitat obligations.
  • Technical input into standards, guidance, and training to ensure the wider business, and our supply partners, have the tools and support to protect and enhance biodiversity on our sites and through the work we do in the wider landscape, and to ensure company compliance.
  • Undertaking ecological field surveys, including acting as Ecological Clerk of Works, performing site inspections, surveys and other ecological tasks.
  • Ensuring ecological data for Severn Trent is collated, stored, maintained and analysed to provide insights in future developments and opportunities.
  • Managing day-to-day contact with ecological contractors.
  • Supporting incident response - providing technical ecological expertise and advice.
  • Build good relationships with the Environment Agency, Natural England and other stakeholders to develop collaborative approaches that deliver habitat and species gains and risk mitigation.
  • Support research and development into innovative ways to deliver ecological outcomes both within Severn Trent Water and as part of cross water company research projects.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

We’re seeking our new ecologists to have a working knowledge of opportunities and challenges facing species and habitat conservation and the policies and legislations relating to it. Ideally you will have licences for at least one protected species.

To be successful, it’s expected that you’ll have a relevant degree in ecology or a related discipline and be a member (or working towards membership) of a relevant professional body. We would also like you to have knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain application and use of the calculator as well as having experience and knowledge in different environmental policy frameworks that operate in England and Wales.

You will need to have excellent written and verbal communication skills and will also need to be competent with using Microsoft applications and GIS systems including mapping using UKHAB.

The right skills and experience are important, but if you have the right character, positivity, and a caring attitude we want to talk to you too. As we're hiring multiple ecologists, we welcome applications from recent graduates as well as those more experienced. We value a mix of experience levels to foster in-role progression and learning opportunities. While the advert outlines our expectations, we're open to considering candidates who may not meet all the requirements.

A full UK driving licence is essential as you will need to travel to other offices and sites.

We welcome people from all walks of life and celebrate individuality as we know diverse minds, experiences and backgrounds help us to learn and better serve our communities. We want people who show up and get involved. Those who are ready to be part of something bigger and who want to make a difference because they care.Is that you?
