Job summary

Randstad CPE is seeking an experienced EC&I Technician (Electrical, Control & Instrumentation) for our Exeter site. You will perform planned and reactive maintenance on instrumentation, electrical, and control systems, ensuring safe, reliable plant operation and contributing to continuous improvement.

The role involves calibration, asset logging in CMMS, and collaboration with operations to meet KPIs. A 1-in-4 on-call rota and a comprehensive benefits package accompany a 40-hour week.

Qualifications

• Recognised engineering apprenticeship with a relevant technical qualification (e.g., City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent).
• Practical experience in Control & Instrumentation engineering within a process industry, power generation facility, or heavy industrial environment.
• Hands-on experience working with DCS and/or SCADA systems.
• Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Strong analytical, fault-finding, and problem-solving skills with a proactive mindset.
• Solid understanding of health, safety, and environmental standards within an industrial setting.
• Clear verbal and written communication skills with strong self-management abilities.

Responsibilities

• Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Perform planned preventative and unplanned corrective maintenance on instrumentation, electrical, and control systems.
• Calibration & Instrumentation: Manage site calibration programs and maintain precise calibration records.
• Asset Management & Reporting: Conduct plant and safety inspections and log assets in CMMS.
• Safety & Compliance: Perform risk assessments and adhere to Safe Systems of Work and Permit to Work.
• Contractor Management: Assist in coordinating and supervising third-party contractors on site.
• Operational Alignment: Collaborate with operations to hit KPIs and improve plant reliability.
• On-Call & Breakdown Response: Participate in a 1-in-4 callout rota for out-of-hours breakdowns.
• Secondary Duties: Support store/inventory and cover senior engineering tasks for development.

Salary: £49000 per year + annual bonus scheme + comprehensive benefits package

Working Pattern: 40 hours per week (Day Shift: Monday to Friday) + 1-in-4 Callout Rota

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced EC&I Technician to join our engineering team. This is an excellent opportunity for an EC&I professional who enjoys troubleshooting complex systems, working collaboratively across multiple disciplines, and contributing to continuous improvement within a modern industrial environment.

You will be responsible for both planned and reactive maintenance activities across the site, ensuring plant equipment and control systems operate safely, reliably, and efficiently. You will also cover aspects of the C&I Engineer role as required to broaden your technical knowledge and support career progression.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Perform planned preventative and unplanned corrective maintenance on instrumentation, electrical, and control systems. Diagnose faults and execute effective, long-term solutions.

• Calibration & Instrumentation: Manage site calibration programs and maintain precise calibration records. Work confidently with instrument loop drawings, schematics, and P&IDs.

• Asset Management & Reporting: Conduct plant and safety inspections. Maintain accurate asset and maintenance logging within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

• Safety & Compliance: Perform risk assessments and strictly adhere to Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and Permit to Work (PTW) procedures at all times.

• Contractor Management: Assist in the coordination and supervision of third-party contractors on site to ensure safe working practices.

• Operational Alignment: Collaborate closely with operations and maintenance teams to hit target KPIs, improve plant reliability, and support environmental performance.

• On-Call & Breakdown Response: Participate in a 1-in-4 callout rota to respond to plant breakdowns outside normal working hours when required.

• Secondary Duties: Support store/inventory functions occasionally and cover senior engineering tasks to aid personal development.

Candidate Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience

• Recognised engineering apprenticeship with a relevant technical qualification (e.g., City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent).

• Practical experience in Control & Instrumentation engineering within a process industry, power generation facility, or heavy industrial environment.

Desirable Qualifications & Skills

• ONC/HNC in an engineering or technical discipline.

• CompEx 1-4 certification.

• Knowledge of Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS).

• Formal Health & Safety qualification (e.g., IOSH or NEBOSH).

• Full UK driving licence.

• Experience with Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and Permit to Work systems.

• Good general IT literacy (MS Office, CMMS platforms)
