Professional Duties of a Teacher

- Exercise of general professional duties
- A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:
- (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
- (b) if employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school where he/she may be required to work.
Exercise of particular dutiesA teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) shall perform, in accordance with directions from the principal, such duties as may be reasonably assigned.Similarly, teachers employed by a board shall perform duties as directed by the board or principal of the school where they work.Key Responsibilities
- Planning
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
- Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
- Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils' development and progress.
General- Promoting pupils' progress and well-being.
- Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, and career matters.
- Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs.
- Communicating with parents and external bodies.
- Participating in meetings related to these activities.
Assessment/Reporting- Providing assessments, reports, and references on pupils.
Staff Development- Participating in staff development and performance review schemes.
- Reviewing teaching methods and participating in training.
- Advising on curriculum and assessment development.
Discipline/Health and Safety- Maintaining order and safety in accordance with policies.
- Participating in school meetings regarding curriculum and organization.
Public Examinations- Preparing pupils for exams, assessing, and supervising during exams.
Management and Administration- Contributing to staff recruitment and development.
- Managing work of other teachers.
- Participating in curriculum and school management activities.
Working Hours and Days- Availability for 195 days per year, with specific hours and breaks as detailed.
Staff Cover- Supervising pupils when teachers are absent, with specific conditions based on school size.
Other duties as assigned, with a focus on promoting good relations and equality, in line with legislation.Person Specification

Section 1 - Essential Criteria
- Qualifications: Recognized teaching qualification for Northern Ireland.
- Experience: At least 1 year of teaching Key Stage 1, supporting diverse learners, including those with SEND, and using digital media.
- Registration: Registered with GTCNI before starting.
Section 2 - Additional Essential Criteria
- Knowledge of NI Curriculum, Safeguarding, SEND Code of Practice, teaching strategies, IT systems, assessment methods.
- Skills: Effective teaching, classroom management, inclusive environment, teamwork, problem-solving, initiative.
- Values: Alignment with school ethos, as detailed on the school's website.
Section 3 - Desirable Criteria
- Experience in curriculum development and extracurricular activities.
