JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher
Regulations

Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987

  1. Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out professional duties as required, including:

  • if employed as a teacher under the reasonable direction of the principal;
  • if employed by a board without being assigned to a specific school, under the reasonable direction of the board and the principal of any school where required to work.
  1. Exercise of particular duties

Teachers shall perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the employing authority, including:

  • performing specific duties as directed;
  • participating in planning, teaching, assessment, student guidance, staff development, discipline, health and safety, examinations, management activities, and administration as outlined in the detailed responsibilities below.
Key Responsibilities
  1. Planning
  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
  • Assessing and reporting on pupils' development and progress.
  1. General
  • Promoting pupils' progress and well-being;
  • Providing advice on educational and social matters, including future careers;
  • Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs;
  • Communicating with parents and external bodies;
  • Participating in relevant meetings.
  1. Assessment/Reporting

Contributing to assessments, reports, and references, maintaining confidentiality where necessary.

  1. Staff Development
  • Participating in staff development and performance reviews;
  • Reviewing and developing teaching methods and programmes;
  • Advising on curriculum development and teaching materials.
  1. Discipline/Health and Safety
  • Maintaining discipline and safeguarding health and safety;
  • Participating in curriculum and pastoral meetings.
  1. Public Examinations

Preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, and supervising during exams.

  1. Management and Administration
  • Contributing to staff recruitment and development;
  • Managing or coordinating other teachers' work;
  • Participating in curriculum and school management activities;
  • Handling administrative tasks such as attendance and resource management.
  1. Work Schedule
  • Availability for 195 days per year, with specified hours and duties;
  • Adherence to break and work hour regulations.
  1. Staff Cover

Providing cover for absent teachers within specified conditions and school size considerations.

This description is subject to review and may include other duties appropriate to the grade. The post-holder must promote good relations, equality, and comply with legislation.

  • Experience in curriculum development, residential trips, and extracurricular activities.
