Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Workshop Supervisor at the Department of Space and Climate Physics (Mullard Space Science Laboratory), University College London (UCL). The role involves liaising with design engineers, project managers, and managing the allocation of mechanical work in the workshop in conjunction with a co-supervisor.

The post holder will collaborate with other engineers to ensure work is carried out efficiently in the workshop, meeting the demanding requirements of space hardware projects.

Responsibilities include supporting assembly work in cleanrooms, manufacturing and assembling test jigs for testing, and ensuring the proper functioning of space instrumentation essential for data reception and analysis.

A key aspect of the role is ensuring health and safety in the workshop, including completing accident reports and drafting risk assessments for activities in the welding shop, chemical laboratory, and mechanical workshop.

This is a fixed-term role for 2 years, with the possibility of extension depending on funding. It is also a part-time position (FTE, approximately 3 days per week).

About you

The ideal candidate will focus on efficiency and effective management to ensure the workshop delivers quality components within project timelines and budget. This includes managing workshop staff, conducting appraisals, maintaining manufacturing equipment, and introducing new tools and machinery.

Applicants should have an ONC-level qualification as a toolmaker, with in-depth knowledge of workshop practices related to machining, turning, cleaning, and surface treatments like Alodine, anodize, and Surtec. Ability to interpret engineering drawings and CAD models is essential.
