DB Cargo UK currently has opportunities available to join our Maintenance team at our Stoke site as an Engineering Apprentice.

As an Engineering Apprentice, you will ensure that all work related to the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of Traction & Rolling Stock (T&RS) and components is completed safely, thoroughly, professionally, and on time.

This is a one-year apprenticeship combining classroom learning and depot work. We aim to support new talent in gaining a Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Operations through learning with our experienced engineers and building a solid foundation in all aspects of Traction & Rolling Stock.

Closing Date: 25th May 2025

Assessment Centre Date: Week commencing 7th or 14th July 2025 – specific date to be confirmed.

Approximate Start Date: 1st September 2025

What will you be doing?

The one-year apprenticeship will develop your rail engineering skills through classroom-based learning and hands-on depot tasks, supported by a skills coach and the maintenance team.

You will develop skills in the following areas:

  1. Safe and professional working practices, including legislation, regulation, industry procedures, and safety requirements.
  2. The scientific, technical, engineering, mathematical, and design principles supporting maintenance of our Wagon Fleet.
  3. Effective contribution to engineering solutions and innovation, including problem-solving, diagnostics, project planning and management, time management, and quality assurance.
  4. Career skills such as time management, analytical thinking, communication, and organization.
  5. Safe and correct handling of equipment.
  6. Using systematic fault diagnosis techniques for mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  7. Using test and measuring instruments in metric and imperial units.
What are we looking for?

We seek individuals with a keen interest in engineering and maintenance, and the ambition to build a successful career with DB Cargo UK.

You should be proactive in your training and development, inquisitive about how things work, and eager to learn.

Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively and honestly with colleagues is essential.

Safety is our top priority. You must be able to follow instructions, rules, and regulations to ensure all maintenance is performed safely.

You must hold at least two GCSEs including Maths and English at Grade 4 (C) or above, live within a 60-minute commute of the depot, and be 18 years or older due to the safety-critical nature of the role. A safety-critical medical assessment will be conducted for all new starters.
