Job description

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Health & Safety Advisor to lead our safety culture across our campus. Reporting directly to the Facilities Director, you will be our internal expert on all matters of health and safety, helping us to ensure that every part of our organisation remains compliant, secure, and focused on continuous improvement.

This is a vital role where you will have real influence. You will promote a positive and proactive safety culture, advising senior leaders and staff at all levels. You will develop and maintain our health, safety and environmental strategy, keeping our practices aligned with the very latest legislation. The Health & Safety Advisor will manage audits, fire safety management, risk assessments, compliance reporting, and training provision, empowering colleagues to fulfil their responsibilities confidently and effectively.

Job Description

The Health & Safety Advisor manages safety and related activities, ensuring compliance with Government and Stonyhurst policies, directives and procedures. Acts as the lead internal safety consultant for Stonyhurst.

The Health and Safety Advisor will have responsibilities as follows:

The Health and Safety Advisor will be responsible to and appraised by the Facilities Director.

This is a full time, permanent role based on-site.

The salary for this role is £35,000.00-£40,000.00 per year

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Mission and Identity

  • Actively promote the College’s mission and identity as set out in the Stonyhurst mission statement.

Health and Safety:

  • Promote a positive health and safety culture throughout the Company.
  • Developing health and safety management systems including quality assurance systems and compliance with external audits.
  • Managing and co-ordinating audits, including liaising with external contractors.
  • Supporting and developing the health, safety and environmental strategy.
  • Ensuring compliance with legislation and incorporate any updates in law into the health and safety policy.
  • Design strategies to reduce health and safety incident occurrences.
  • Understand the application of the Health and Safety at Work, etc. Act 1974 and other legislation relevant to Stonyhurst.
  • Keep up to date with changes in current legislation and to bring to the attention of the Facilities Director relevant new legislation.
  • Attend such courses/seminars run by external sources to enable accurate interpretation of legislation to enable implementation within Stonyhurst.
  • Ensure that all "assessments" as required by legislation are conducted and reviewed at relevant intervals and to maintain records of the same.
  • To ensure that all Directors, Advisors, Academic staff, leaders and Executive understand and fulfil their responsibilities with regard to health and safety.
  • Make provision for adequate and appropriate training to be provided to all employees.
  • To ensure that notification and reporting procedures to the relevant statutory authorities are carried out.
  • Understand and ensure that the implications and duties imposed by new Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments, H.S.E. Guidance Notes and Codes of Practice are brought to the attention of their Line Advisor.

Record Keeping and Communication

  • Maintain and update comprehensive risk assessments as required.
  • Maintain and update Fire safety procedures and documentation.
  • Maintain and update training records.
  • Working in partnership with the Human Resources Department and other stakeholders to develop and maintain Statutory Health Surveillance and Monitoring systems and procedures for the organisation.
  • Reporting as necessary to statutory authorities.
  • Produce reports as and when necessary to Senior Management/Governors.

Policy, Compliance and Health and Safety

  • Manage the fire alarm and evacuation procedure for the site.
  • Oversee the safety and quality of the environment throughout campus.
  • Complete risk assessment in conjunction with relevant colleagues.
  • Complete annual risk assessments related to their areas.
  • Oversee the undertaking of the annual Fire Risk Assessment and implementation of findings and recommendations.

Working with Others

  • Be an effective team member, working alongside other members of the Facilities and Senior Management team

Day to Day Commitments

  • To work full-time hours as necessary for the performance of duties.
  • The post holder shall be required to respond in person in the event of a call-out, an emergency or an incident that has occurred during evenings and weekends.
  • Perform such other duties as the Facilities Director may, from time to time reasonably require.

Essential Competencies

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate
  • Experience in Fire Risk Assessments

Desirable

  • Prior experience in managing Health and Safety in a large, fast paced environment.

Person Specification

  • Have significant Safety Management experience working in a large and diverse environment
  • In-depth knowledge of the practical application of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and its associate legislation
  • Successful experience of functional management e.g. budget management, information systems, prioritising a demanding workload, meeting deadlines, managing and coordinating meetings
  • Relevant managerial and operations experience in the development, implementation and maintenance of a Health and Safety Policy and implementing codes of practice and guidance
  • The ability to undertake in-house training events to promote and develop Health and Safety throughout the college
  • Knowledge to manage and develop fire systems throughout the college
  • Have knowledge of the requirements of permits to work systems in operation and the safe working practice of construction and related industries
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Have appropriate skills to work as a pro-active member of a busy Facilities team
  • Possess excellent organisational skills with the ability to work on own initiative
  • Good attention to detail with ability to draft written reports
  • Highly developed negotiating, influencing and persuading skills
