A leading research institution in the UK seeks a Research Fellow to develop models from marine electromagnetic data. The role involves collaboration with international partners on a project focused on submarine volcanoes. Ideal candidates should have a strong publication record and be nearing completion of a relevant PhD.
Organisation/Company: UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON
Research Field: Environmental science, Geosciences
Researcher Profile: Recognised Researcher (R2), First Stage Researcher (R1), Established Researcher (R3)
Country: United Kingdom
Application Deadline: 12 Jun 2025 - 00:00 (UTC)
Type of Contract: Other
Job Status: Full-time
Funding: Not funded by a EU programme
Research Infrastructure: No
We seek a Research Fellow with a proven publication record to develop resistivity models from marine-controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) data, to be acquired in February-March 2026, and to interpret these models using other relevant geophysical and geological data.
The ideal candidate will have skills in marine CSEM but we will consider applicants from other fields of geophysics.
The Research Fellow will join an international team in the project “Imaging the magma storage region and hydrothermal system of an active arc volcano,” funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council and the US National Science Foundation. The project aims to determine the geometry and plumbing of the hydrothermal system of an active submarine arc volcano and its relationship with the underlying partial melt that supplies magmatic fluids and drives circulation.
The project focuses on Brothers Volcano in the southwest Pacific, an ideal site due to extensive geophysical and geological data, including results from two cruises in 2025. The successful candidate may participate in at-sea data acquisition.
The position is based at the School of Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton’s Waterfront Campus at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton. The research fellow will collaborate with partners at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (USA), GNS Science (New Zealand), GEOMAR and the University of Bremen (Germany), ETH Zurich (Switzerland), and the University of Genoa (Italy).
We promote a culture of inclusion, respect, and equality. Candidates are selected based on merit and ability, and we value diversity. We welcome applications from all interested candidates committed to fostering an inclusive work environment.
Applicants should be nearing completion of a relevant PhD. The title of Research Fellow will be awarded upon PhD completion; prior to that, the position will be titled Senior Research Assistant.
