Job overview

To assist the team in maintaining a well-stocked, tidy, and welcoming environment for patients. Carry out tasks involving direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse, following local policies and trust guidelines. Relieve trained nurses of non-clinical duties.

Rotate through all clinical areas to meet service needs. Cover the unit over a 24-hour period from Monday 07:30 to Saturday 14:00.

Main duties of the job
  • Transfer patients throughout clinical areas, including wheelchairs and trolleys.
  • Receive patients into reception/clinical areas, verify details, and act as a chaperone when necessary.
  • Assist in the safe movement and positioning of patients.
  • Clean, check, and prepare transfer trolleys.
  • Assist in cleaning clinical areas and equipment, ensuring safety.
  • Remove clinical waste and body fluids.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels.
  • Deliver specimens.
  • Report untoward incidents to senior nurses.
  • Compile admission packs.
  • Participate in internal rotation within the unit.

Join the Elective Centre team, providing high standards of care to adult patients attending surgery/procedures. The department operates from 07:30 Monday to 14:00 Saturday, with various shifts. We cover Orthopaedics, General and Breast surgery, Vascular, ENT, Oral and minor plastic surgery, Urology, and chronic pain. The unit includes a day surgery, procedure room, and 14 inpatient beds. The environment is busy and demanding, requiring flexibility and excellent communication skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Provide care under supervision of a registered nurse, adhering to best practices.
  • Check and prepare transfer trolleys, including oxygen, suction, and resus equipment.
  • Transfer patients, report issues, and assist with patient movement.
  • Prepare clinical areas for procedures, ensuring equipment functionality and supplies.
  • Support procedures, carry out safety checks, and assist in cleaning and waste removal.
  • Maintain stock levels, order supplies, and manage storage.
  • Deliver specimens and x-ray materials as needed.
  • Follow infection control measures.
  • Undertake recovery duties post-operation as instructed.
  • Complete documentation according to policies.
  • Report incidents via IR1 system.
  • Participate in rotation and staff meetings.
