Job description

The Service & Team:

An exciting opportunity exists to join the Primary Authority team at Cornwall Council as an Environmental Health Officer. This is a small team which includes the Primary Authority Account Manager and two full time members of staff who work with a number of our Primary Authority partners. Cornwall currently has 61 active Primary Authority partnerships across the hospitality, retail, manufacturing, importing and distribution sectors covering all regulatory areas, so this is an exciting time to join the team to help provide support to our current Primary Authority partners and to be involved in the development of new partnerships. Our Primary Authority delivery is one of our commercial products which is charged out to businesses on a cost recovery basis.

The team is part of the Environmental Health team, which currently has around 30 officers, and works very closely with our Trading Standards team and our colleagues in Fire Safety.

The Role:

Ideally, we’re looking to hear from those with a background in Health & Safety who also have experience in providing advice to businesses of all sizes, including manufacturers, retailers, caterers and the hospitality sector. However, we would also welcome applications from those looking to gain experience in relation to providing Primary Authority support to businesses, as well as newly qualified or nearly qualified Officers. This is a perfect role to develop new skills alongside an experienced, supportive and positive team, and the role will also provide you with the ability to fully understand the businesses that you work with so that you can identify and provide the support they need to grow and thrive.

Training is a big part of the support that we provide to our Primary Authority partners, so experience in delivering training will be useful.

Additional support may also be provided to our Health & Safety enforcement team.

You must be a team player and enjoy new challenges, often working to tight deadlines. Cornwall Council offers a flexible working pattern and your work will involve travelling around Cornwall as well as out of county, and you may need to work outside normal office hours to meet or work with our Primary Authority partners. In return, you can enjoy over 400 miles of spectacular coastline with lots of activities available all year round on the sea or in the beautiful countryside that Cornwall has to offer.

This is a public/customer-facing role, where the statutory English language requirement for public sector workers applies.

This position will be subject to a standard criminal record disclosure check.

Working Pattern:

This is a full time position of 37 hours per week. This will be generally Monday to Friday but some out of hours working and occasional weekend working may be required. Flexible working options are available, such as compressed hours.

What you’ll need to succeed:

You will have a minimum degree level qualification in a relevant subject area or equivalent experience, and will be registered with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Board (EHORB). You must demonstrate that you are able to meet the competency requirements to act as an inspector for Cornwall Council under the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974. If you can also demonstrate competency to undertake food safety interventions as defined in the Food Law Code of Practice, this may be helpful but not essential. We will also consider applications from those who are nearly qualified.
