Using proven industry knowledge and technical insight, you will collaborate with internal Power & Renewables stakeholders to support evidence-based underwriting decisions, playing a key role in The Hartford's goal to underwrite human achievement and be the Insurer of the Transition.
The role reports directly to the Chief Risk Engineer, Marine & Energy International, with daily operational activities guided by Power & Renewables Underwriters.
You will work closely with Underwriting and Claims teams in London and regularly liaise with Risk Engineering specialists in the USA Risk Engineering Team.
Job Responsibilities & Competencies
- Review and assess technical underwriting information from brokers and clients to inform Power & Renewables underwriters, primarily for Property Damage (Operational & Construction) and BI/DSU, and potentially for Liability and Cyber coverage.
- Enhance existing tools for structured risk appraisal, including exposure quantification and risk quality assessment.
- Support the Chief Risk Engineer in technology development, emerging risks analysis, and strategic development of the Risk Engineering function.
- Assist Claims professionals during claims management and support internal Lessons Learned processes.
- Utilize internal and third-party data to improve understanding of sector risks and causes of loss.
- Participate in client facility visits, lead or assist in these visits, and contribute to market survey reports, providing risk management services when appropriate.
- Share knowledge and collaborate with Hartford Risk Engineering practitioners across business units.
- Work with colleagues from actuaries, claims, data analysis, IT, risk management, and exposure management to integrate risk engineering insights into decision-making processes.
- Engage in technical insurance market committees and associations.
- Present at conferences and author articles on risk and insurance topics within Power & Renewables.
- Support colleagues' professional development through knowledge sharing, guidance, and coaching.
- Continue your own professional development through technical training, further education, and professional accreditation.
Qualifications & Capabilities
- Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred.
- Understanding of general insurance principles.
- Deep knowledge of causes of losses and incidents in the Power & Renewables industry.
- Willingness to learn about technical, reliability, operational safety, and insurance issues.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with all organizational levels.
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external clients.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Team player with the capability to work independently.
