We are excited to announce an exciting job opportunity at our Severn Beach, Bristol location! We are looking for a talented Technical Author to join our dynamic and rapidly growing global team on a permanent basis. In this role, you will create and refine highly technical documentation, prioritising content validation and review. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional written and verbal communication abilities and will collaborate effectively across various departments with diverse stakeholders. At Oxford Instruments, our commitment to our customers is paramount; this position is pivotal in ensuring the quality, accuracy, and timeliness needed to exceed our customers’ expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce, develop, and maintain clear and concise technical documentation to support our high-tech product range for our systems.
  • Peer review work by other authors, following internal guidance for editing and accuracy.
  • Research, analyse and understand the technology and applications for which documentation will be produced.
  • Collaborate with engineers and managers to clarify any technical queries professional manner.
  • Produce and provide any photographs or illustrations required.
  • Liaise with subject-matter experts, including Sales and Marketing colleagues, to generate documentation for project launches and internal/external customer support.
  • Test and update the written material, including working in our engineering lab to validate procedures. Understand system requirements and limitations.
  • Communicate clearly with a wide range of audiences in an appropriate way, including engineering lab leaders, test technicians, design engineers and software developers. Be able to summarise appropriately for the audience.
  • Maintain robust documentation systems, including version control, editing and accuracy, keeping up to date with the latest technology and products.
  • Ensure technical information is organised, managed and published as per the required timescales.
  • Upload master files to the server and download them for translation into different languages.
  • Direct and coordinate external providers, where applicable, such as printers, translators, etc., to ensure product integrity.
  • Demonstrable exemplary technical writing capability.
  • Excellent technical comprehension, including the ability to understand the detailed function and performance of complex products and systems.

Education/Qualifications

  • A recognised technical authoring qualification (ISTC, NVQ, Diploma, etc.) degree or equivalent.
  • High level of competence using PC based applications; desktop publishing, photo editing / digital imaging software, spreadsheets, including MadCap Flare, Adobe Acrobat, SolidWorks/Solid Edge and Microsoft Office.
  • Ideally, your background will be in either the semiconductor, electro-mechanical or scientific sector, as experience or writing documentation for scientific instrumentation is highly desirable.
  • Minimum experience of three years in a technical author role.
  • Experience in applying Simplified Technical English is an advantage.

Professional Skills/Abilities

  • High levels of technical writing capabilities and familiarity with common procedures such as document review cycles.
  • The ability to follow company documentation procedures and corporate style.
  • Good proofreading and peer review skills.
  • Good presentation skills, including being able to demonstrate internal procedures or document improvements to other authors.
  • Experience in writing procedural information for using and maintaining products.
  • The ability to research and analyse complex technical information.
  • An understanding of manufacturing and design practices and processes.
  • The ability to understand the function and performance of products and to deliver to deadlines.
  • The ability to take in and communicate technical detail and have discussions at a technical level.
  • High levels of accuracy and attention to detail.

Personal Qualities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate the flow of information with engineers, technicians, and manufacturing staff.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills with the ability to present information at an appropriate level for the audience.
  • Attention to detail, methodical and thorough.
  • A good team player able to demonstrate emotional intelligence and an appreciation of other people’s skills, abilities and experience.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability, remaining calm under pressure.
  • Able and willing to travel on occasions.
  • Minimum of three days on site.
