Job Description

A leading provider of innovative laser systems to help people in various global markets, including but not limited to renewables, microelectronics, research, life science, automotive, and medicine.

We seek an experienced Senior / Lead Systems Design Engineer to coordinate system design primarily from the perspective of the underlying and customer-facing control system.

This opening comes at a time of exciting growth for the Company, with an opportunity to join a multidisciplinary engineering team and shape the next generation of cutting-edge laser products.

You will work as part of the development team from the feasibility phase through the full manufacturing release cycle. Successful candidates will develop a comprehensive understanding that spans across system design to become vital experts in the laser system.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Ownership of control system design reliability analysis, including documented failure mode analysis.
  2. Analysis of system adherence to safety standards.
  3. Critically reviewing design choices considering the needs of all stakeholders, from engineering to production, customer, and field support.
  4. Working with prototype systems and seeking improvements through empirical and paper-based detailed analysis.
  5. Leading or actively participating in root cause analysis of failures in the early manufacturing cycle.
  6. Collaborating closely with optical, software, and electronics teams.
  7. Acting as the technology conduit between the software/electronics group and optical teams.
  8. Maintaining a broad view of system design while contributing to detailed development work.
  9. Troubleshooting and conducting root cause failure analysis during development.
  10. Contributing to troubleshooting and coordinating corrective actions for manufacturing or field issues on production systems.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Physics or Engineering, or similar BSc degree, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with experience in cross-disciplinary issue investigation and root-cause analysis methodologies.
  • A tenacious approach to problem-solving with a desire to identify the root cause.
  • Experience in electronics, software, and optical issues troubleshooting.
  • Basic understanding of electronics and control systems.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Detail-oriented, capable of working from general instructions and identifying all necessary elements.
  • Ability to drive projects within the organization.
  • Comfortable working independently to investigate issues outside of your expertise.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and communicating complex technologies effectively.
  • Ownership of control system design requirements, including defining system functional block diagrams, constraints, and control algorithms based on inputs from other disciplines.
  • Collaborating with design personnel for requirement adaptation and final testing.

Additional Skills

  • Knowledge of laser designs, such as ultrashort pulses, mode-locking, UV, fiber lasers, solid-state laser oscillators, and amplifiers.
  • Proficiency in coding (e.g., Python, C#, MATLAB) for data analysis or instrumentation control.
  • Basic electronics knowledge.
