Interim Project Director – Shared Services
Band 8d / 9 | NHS Agency Cap Rates | Inside IR35

Location: London/South East UK – Hybrid Working Available
Contract Length: 6 Months
Start Date: ASAP
Employment Type: Interim / Contract via Agency

An NHS system is seeking a highly experienced Interim Project Director to lead the delivery of a strategic programme focused on the development and implementation of shared back-office services across multiple NHS organisations. This is a high-profile role at Band 8d/9 level (in line with NHS agency cap rates), offering the opportunity to influence system-level transformation and drive long-term operational efficiency.

Key Objectives:

  • Lead the end-to-end planning and delivery of a shared services model across a defined NHS footprint, covering functions such as Finance, HR, Procurement, and other enabling services;
  • Engage and align multiple stakeholders across partner organisations to ensure shared vision, governance, and delivery accountability;
  • Develop the programme infrastructure, including benefits realisation plans, risk management, stakeholder engagement, and reporting frameworks;
  • Ensure alignment with national policy, ICS strategies, and best practice in shared services delivery;
  • Oversee operational readiness and implementation phases to ensure a smooth transition to the new operating model;

Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrable experience of successfully establishing shared services across multiple NHS organisations or within a complex public sector environment.
  • Proven track record of operating at Director level or equivalent in the NHS.
  • Strong programme leadership skills with a focus on collaboration, transformation, and value for money.
  • In-depth understanding of NHS culture, governance, and stakeholder dynamics.
  • Available to start immediately or at short notice.

This assignment will be offered on a 6-month basis, inside IR35, with hybrid working arrangements available.
