Wood is currently looking for a Fire & Gas Engineer experienced in design, implementation, compliance, and safety to join our Systems Integration team as part of Woods Consulting business unit to support our UK projects.


This is a hybrid role based at any of the following UK offices: Aberdeen, Staines, Reading, Glasgow, or Northampton, with travel as required.


Please note applicants must pass the HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.


The Role

A Fire and Gas Instrument Engineer plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of industrial facilities by designing, implementing, and maintaining fire and gas detection systems to ensure safety in environments such as Oil & Gas, Chemical Plants, and manufacturing facilities.


F&G Engineers work closely with process safety and automation teams to integrate fire and gas systems with other safety systems. Experience with software - Dectronix EQP - is required.

Responsibilities

The key objectives of this role include:

  • Designing fire and gas detection systems tailored to gas plant specifications and industry standards
  • Preparing design documents such as detailed specifications, cause and effects diagrams, functional diagrams, F&G layouts, fire and gas philosophies, instrument specifications for equipment, BOM, system architecture, and operational narratives
  • Selecting suitable instruments for hazardous applications
  • Reviewing deliverables from other disciplines and conducting inter-discipline reviews
  • Producing material requisitions and contributing to technical bid evaluations
  • Reviewing vendor drawings and consolidating feedback
  • Implementing control systems for fire and gas detection, ensuring seamless integration with existing plant safety systems
  • Ensuring compliance with UK safety standards and regulations for gas plants
  • Conducting safety audits and risk assessments specific to gas plant environments
  • Leading projects for installation and upgrades of fire and gas detection systems in gas plants
  • Coordinating with cross-functional teams to ensure project success
  • Maintaining detailed records of designs, installations, and compliance checks
  • Providing regular reports on system performance and incidents
  • Adhering to discipline-specific procedures and contributing to continuous improvement
  • Supporting development and delivery of safety standards and assurance
  • Participating in audits and incident investigations
  • Maintaining own competence and pursuing professional development
  • Providing discipline support to the business
  • Staying informed of regulatory, legislative, and technological developments and promoting this knowledge within the team
