About the role

Balfour Beatty is currently seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join their Power T&D team.

Background does not have to be within High Voltage Power industry, as the delivery of construction design management is transferable. Our stakeholders, clients, and engineering teams respect good quality leadership and the willingness to achieve the project goals.

This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic, passionate individual who has a strong background in Geotechnical Engineering.

Role purpose

To take responsibility for the design delivery and suitability for works across Power T&D construction projects, focusing on Overhead Line (OHL) foundations and geotechnical delivery. Collaborate with project teams, designers, and subcontractors to deliver safe and suitable scope of works aligned with project objectives. Provide advice on constructability, sequencing of civil design, and temporary works for Power T&D. Support geotechnical aspects across various workstreams, engage in bid development, tendering, and innovation projects alongside team leaders.

What you'll be doing

• Lead and manage a section of the Geotechnical and OHL foundation design team.
• Coordinate the design of foundations and geotechnical works for OHL, Cabling, and Substation projects from feasibility to detailed design and installation.
• Ensure timely delivery and high-quality outputs in compliance with standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
• Understand client requirements, including implicit needs, and contribute to pricing and design solutions.
• Assess and identify design and temporary works requirements, promoting a Safety by Design approach.
• Lead civil project designs, including reinforced concrete, ground risk assessments, tower capacity, slope stability, and geotechnical management.
• Maintain compliance with CDM regulations and legal standards.
• Review technical quality and approve designs as permitted.
• Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and support tender processes.
• Guide and upskill team members, support engineering design advancements, and contribute to development of design tools.

Who we're looking for

Skills Required:

• Management experience
• Degree in civil or geotechnical engineering; Chartered Engineer (ICE or IStruct)
• Proven post-graduate experience in civil engineering
• Experience supervising sub-consultants/subcontractors
• Extensive geotechnical design experience
• Proficiency with Tekla Tedds, Microsoft Office, CAD
• Knowledge of Eurocodes and British standards
