Physical Design Researcher

Location: Engineering - Leuven | Just now

As a DTCO Researcher, you will work on the cutting edge of advanced CMOS technologies, contributing to their evaluation, benchmarking, and optimization of design and block-level aspects to fully utilize future technologies.

What you will do

You will evaluate the impact of various technology options (device, standard cell architecture, back-end of line) on the power, performance, and area of different SoCs or submodules through physical design experiments. You will analyze how these options affect circuit-level aspects such as critical paths, clock trees, and power grids. Additionally, you will contribute to developing automated flows for conducting physical design experiments, work with EDA partners to prepare tools for future nodes, and collaborate with universities on new micro-architecture concepts leveraging novel technology capabilities. Since the focus is on new technology nodes, configuring relevant aspects of the PDK will also be part of your responsibilities.

What we do for you

We offer the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers in nanotechnology at our imec office in Cambridge, UK or at our headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. We can sponsor visas for relocation. You will be part of a team that makes the impossible possible, in an open, multicultural, and informal environment with ample opportunities for initiative and responsibility. We support your development through our corporate university, investing in your technical and personal growth. Your contributions are valued, and we offer a competitive salary with many fringe benefits.

Who you are
  • You have a PhD in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a relevant field, or a master’s degree with at least 3 years of relevant industrial experience in physical design.
  • You possess a solid understanding of digital design and SoC architecture, from devices to logic gates and computer architecture.
  • You are detail-oriented, capable of critical thinking, and comfortable making decisions in a dynamic R&D environment.
  • You are proficient in coding, with experience in version control and documentation.
  • Experience with synthesis and physical design tools such as Cadence Genus/Innovus or Synopsys Fusion/DC/ICC is required.
  • You care about customer satisfaction and the quality of your results.
  • You are a strong team player and effective communicator, eager to share progress, seek feedback, and collaborate effectively.
