Job Description:
JOB PURPOSE
Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/Education Authority, assist with the educational support and the care of the pupil(s) with special educational needs who are in the teacher’s care, both in and outside the classroom.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The specific duties will be determined by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer.
SPECIAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
- Assist the teacher with the support and care of pupils with special educational needs, including enabling access to the curriculum and attending to personal needs such as dietary, feeding, toileting, etc.
- Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils supported.
- Assist with authorized programmes (e.g., Education Plan, Care Plan), participate in their evaluation, and encourage pupil participation.
- Contribute to the inclusion of pupils in mainstream schools under the teacher's guidance.
- Assist with operational challenges and non-invasive medical/clinical needs related to pupils' disabilities.
- Support the implementation of behavioral management programmes as directed.
- Assist pupils in moving around the school and on/off transport.
GENERAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
- Help pupils learn effectively in group and individual settings by managing the learning environment:
- Clarify and explain instructions;
- Ensure the use of equipment and materials;
- Motivate and encourage pupils;
- Reinforce and develop learning areas;
- Promote independence;
- Help pupils stay on task;
- Meet physical/medical needs while encouraging independence.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding home/pupil/teacher/school matters.
- Establish supportive relationships with pupils.
- Prepare resources and materials for support and play sessions.
- Supervise groups or individual pupils during activities, including extracurriculars and ICT use.
- Assist with off-site activities following risk assessments.
- Supervise play, cloakrooms, and personal hygiene routines.
- Administer prescribed medicines and deal with minor injuries.
- Ensure a safe environment and report any concerning signs or symptoms to the teacher.
ADMINISTRATION
- Assist with classroom administration tasks.
- Help implement systems for recording pupil progress.
- Maintain pupil records and provide feedback to teachers.
- Support with duplication, display creation, and resource cataloging.
OTHER DUTIES
- Attend in-service training.
- Assist work placement students.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the post's level by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer.
