JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Classroom Assistant – Special Educational Needs

REPORTS TO: The Principal, through the class teacher

JOB PURPOSE: Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/Education Authority, assist with the educational support and the care of pupils with special educational needs in or outside the classroom.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The precise duties will be determined by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer.

SPECIAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT

• Assist the teacher with supporting pupils with special educational needs, including enabling access to the curriculum and attending to personal needs.
• Develop understanding of the specific needs of supported pupils.
• Assist with authorised programmes (e.g., Education Plan, Care Plan) and participate in their evaluation.
• Contribute to the inclusion of pupils in mainstream schools under the teacher's guidance.
• Support operational and non-invasive medical/clinical difficulties related to pupils' disabilities.
• Support behavioural management programmes as directed.
• Assist pupils with moving around the school and on transport.

GENERAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT

• Assist pupils in learning effectively in groups and individually by managing the learning environment, including clarifying instructions, motivating pupils, and encouraging independence.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding home/pupil/teacher/school matters.
• Establish supportive relationships with pupils.
• Prepare resources and materials for support and play sessions.
• Supervise pupils during activities, including extracurricular and off-site activities, following risk assessments.
• Provide continuity of care, supervise play and cloakrooms, and administer prescribed medicines as required.
• Ensure a safe environment and report any signs indicating a pupil needs immediate attention.

ADMINISTRATION

• Assist with classroom administration and record-keeping of pupil progress.
• Provide feedback on pupils' progress and support the production of charts, displays, and resource cataloguing.

OTHER DUTIES

• Attend training and assist work placement students.
• Perform other duties as assigned within the post's level.
